Sigma to announce three new 17mm f/4, 50mm f/2 and 23mm f/1.4 Contemporary lenses

Sigma is preparing to announce three new Contemporary series lenses, according to Asobinet. Two of them, a 17mm f/4 and 50mm f/2, are said to be designed for full-frame, with a 23mm f/1.4 that will expand the company’s DC DN APS-C lineup. The two full-frame lenses will be coming in Sony E and Leica L mounts while the APS-C lens will also be available in Fuji X. Surprisingly, though, not Micro Four Thirds.

50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary rumours have been getting thrown around occasionally for a little while, although the 17mm f/4 DG DN Contemporary and 23mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary both appear to be fresh rumours. It seems odd to be announcing a 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary when they’ve so recently announced the 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, but the other two should be quite welcome.

Leica announces two new lightweight 35mm and 50mm f/2 Summicron lenses for L mount

Leica has announced two new lightweight Summicron-SL lenses for Leica L mount at 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2. You might be wondering why Leica’s announcing two new 35mm and 50mm f/2 lenses when they already have the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 35mm f/2 and 50mm f/2. But when you compare those to the two new lenses, the size and weight saving, not to mention the massive cost saving, make it quite obvious.

The new Leica Summicron-SL 35mm f/2 and Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 lenses are significantly smaller and lighter than their APO counterparts. In fact, both of the new lenses share identical dimensions, making it easier for video shooters to swap between them without having to rebalance gimbals, etc. They also cost less than half of the APO versions, making them a financially viable option for a lot more L mount photographers.

TTArtisan has today announced their newest lens, a very compact full-frame 50mm f/2 manual focus lens. It’s initially being launched in Nikon Z, Sony E, Fuji X and Micro Four Thirds mounts, with Canon RF, Canon EOS-M and Leica L mounts to follow. The compact lens measures only 34-38mm from the mount to the end of the lens and weights only 191-212g, making it a nice inconspicuous lens for things like street photography.

The new lens has a fairly bright maximum aperture of f/2 and a 10-blade diaphragm for smooth bokeh. 6 elements in 5 groups with two high refraction index elements help to control spherical aberrations and can focus on subjects as close as 50cm. It’s also a super-low-budget lens at a mere $79!

My first impressions of the Fujifilm 50mm f/2

Following my recent controversial dilemma on the future of my Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to test out both the 50mm f/2 and the 90mm f/2 thanks to the lovely people over at Fujifilm. For those that haven’t read the post about the 56mm f/1.2 (it’s here if you want a read), I was genuinely tempted to trade it in for something that was a little more travel friendly eg the 50mm f/2. I was also tempted by the 90mm f/2 to replace the excellent portrait abilities.

For this post however we’ll concentrate on the 50mm f/2 and my short two weeks with it. Unfortunately, we got off on the back foot as I’d just had two weddings booked in this year and I absolutely love the 56mm f/1.2 for weddings; that was nearly my decision made already but let’s give the little lens a chance.

Cosina has anounced four new Voigtländer prime lenses for mirrorless shooters. Out of those, three are made for Nikon Z cameras, and one is intended for Fiji X shooters.

The 50mm f/2 and 35mm are made for full-frame Nikon Z cameras. Of course, you can attach them to an APS-C body too and get 75mm or ~52mm equivalent focal length. The 23mm f/1.2 comes in Nikon Z and Fuji X version, and it was made for APS-C cameras, but it can be used in the crop mode of your full-frame camera.

It’s not often you hear about new UK-based photographic manufacturers these days. At least, certainly not when it comes to lenses. But, it appears that’s exactly what we have, with new lens company, Skyllaney Opto-Mechanics. Their first lens will be a limited edition run of a 50mm f/2 classic Sonnar formula lens with a Leica M mount.

Based off a 1937 pre-war design by Dr Ludwig Bertele, the new Skyllaney 50mm f/2 Bertele contains the same optical formula but with modern lens coatings to increase contrast and reduce flare.  Initially, it will be offered in black anodised aluminium or chrome brass finish and a limited run of only 150 lenses with a further 100 to follow.
