Yongnuo has added itself to the list of third-party companies joining Fuji X mount. Fujifilm opened up the mount to third-party manufacturers a couple of years ago. Since then, the range of third-party lenses has grown quite nicely.
Now, with the announcement of the Yongnuo YN50mm F1.8X DA DSM PRO lens (buy here), Yongnuo joins the growing lineup of third-party manufacturers making lenses for Fuji X mount mirrorless cameras.
How many of you use a 50mm f/1.8 lens? Its popularity across the board has given this lens the nickname of the ‘nifty-fifty’. So-called because of its small size and correspondingly small price tag, but great value. It’s often the first prime lens that photographers buy and is still a firm favourite for many.
But are you getting the most out of your lens? Yongnuo has announced its third full-frame lens in their Sony E-Mount prime lineup. The new Yongnuo YN 50mm F1.8S DF DSM expands the range to three, adding to the YN 35mm f2S DF DSM and the YN 85mm f1.8S DF DSM.
As with the other two, this is a relatively low budget lens with a price estimated to be around $300-350 when it hits the US. Of course, being made by a brand like Yongnuo, we kind of expect it to be fairly low budget. That being said, it does look like YN’s actually making their own lenses now and not simply copying Canon’s and sticking other mounts on them.
It looks like Nikon isn’t the only one dropping long-overdue new glass today. Photos and bits of info have been leaked over the last few days and now, as expected, it’s Panasonic’s turn. Yup, today, Panasonic has officially announced their new Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 full-frame lens for L mount.
Coming in at around $450, this isn’t an inexpensive lens, given that it’s “just” a 50mm f/1.8 lens. With Canon & Sony still floating around at $200-250 for their 50mm f/1.8 mirrorless lenses, the new Panasonic lens sets expectations pretty high.
After yesterday’s image leak of the upcoming Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8, a couple more have been posted to Twitter by Nokishita. An announcement is expected in the next day or two, along with pre-orders. The actual release date, they say, is set for June 25th. The price is expected to be somewhere between 54,000 and 59,400 yen (~$492-542).
This one’s sure taking its time! Last September, a leaked Panasonic lens roadmap showed four new 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm f/1.8 primes being added to the L mount lineup. So far, only one of those lenses has made a public appearance – the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8.
It looks like we might finally be seeing the second of the low budget set, as Nokishita has leaked photos of the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8. They also say that an official announcement should be expected to come at some point this week.
Historically known more for its lens adapters and accessories, Viltrox has been branching out into budget lenses the last few years and they’ve released a mix of manual and autofocus lenses for a number of systems, including a couple for Z-Mount already, including a 20mm f/1.8 manual focus and 85mm f/1.8 autofocus prime lenses.
Now it seems they’re about to release six more lenses for the Nikon Z mirrorless system. All of them are autofocus. Three of them will be for APS-C format and three of them will be full-frame. The six new lenses were on display at the China International Photographic Equipment and Technology Fair (China P&E) in Beijing, China. Interestingly, none of them appeared on the Viltrox lens roadmap published last year.
Well, Canon did it. They actually released a full-frame mirrorless lens designed for entry level users with a cost comparable to its DSLR counterpoint. Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Coming in at a measly $199, this is quite possibly the cheapest full-frame mirrorless lens on the market for any system that actually comes from a camera manufacturer.
The lack of inexpensive lenses to attract newer or lower budget users into the full-frame mirrorless market (especially when there are full-frame cameras under $1K) has been one of the biggest complaints about all the new systems that have come out over the last couple of years. Panasonic just started to address that a little more with their new 85mm f/1.8 for L mount and now Canon seems to be doing so as well.
More information about Canon’s upcoming RF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens has started to leak, including its optical design. Once again, this comes from Nokishita, and it shows that it’s not simply a rehoused EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, but is in fact a new, more refined design, specifically for the RF mount lens.
When you look at the two lens designs side-by-side, they are quite similar, but they are most certainly different designs.
One of the biggest complaints I’ve heard from just about every considering buying into the recent wave of full-frame mirrorless cameras from Canon, Nikon and Panasonic is how huge (and expensive) the lenses are. It’s a big barrier to entry that’s preventing many relatively-low-budget shooters from even considering switching from their DSLRs.
Canon, at least, has said they were planning to do something about it, and now it looks as if we’re getting close. An image of Canon’s upcoming RF mount 50mm f/1.8 STM lens for EOS R cameras has leaked, and finally, it looks like there’s going to be a small (hopefully inexpensive) lens coming!
