2017 is almost out the door (maybe it already is in Australia). As we say goodbye, I wanted to come back to our top ten popular posts of 2017. I was surprised at some of those.
Phones aren’t winning yet – Flickr’s top 25 photos of 2017 dominated by DSLRs and mirrorless
Despite 54% of all photos uploaded to Flickr being shot with iPhones, those at the top of the pile seem to be shot by DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Flickr has determined its users’ top 25 photos of 2017, based on various metrics. Number of views, shares, and favourites created a shortlist which was then checked and judged by real-life humans.

2017 DIYP Gift Guide – Bags
So, you’ve got your camera, your lenses, and your lights. It’s all well and good having the kit, but where do you store it? How do you transport it to a location? Well, nut surprisingly, that’s where bags come into play.
This list contains a number of bags that we use to store and transport out kit. While there’s no single bag out there that suits every purpose, each offers its own unique advantages.
2017 DIYP Gift Guide – Lighting
So, you’ve got your camera and your lenses, but now what? The days are getting shorter, and darker, potentially limiting what you can shoot, and for how long. Even when the weather is great and the days are long, the available light doesn’t always give you what you want and you want to augment it or obliterate it completely.
So, here we’ve put together some of our favourite lights and lighting accessories, including quite a few that we use ourselves on a regular basis for both photography and video work.

With Black Friday and Christmas on the way, there’s plenty of things out there begging for our money. Whether we’re buying a gift for somebody else or for ourselves, we want to get the best bang for our buck.
So, in this first part of our 2017 Gift Guide series, we’re going to cover cameras. There’s quite a variety here, from instant to medium format, but here are ten of our current favourites.
This calendar will give you a photographic assignment for each day of 2017
A week ago, we posted a 52 challenge for 2017, basically it’s a photographic task a week to help you evolve as a photographer. If you want to take it to the next level Photoblog are offering a similar concept. A printable calendar with a-task-a-day for the entire year of 2017.
The idea is simple, each day has a task and as you complete the task you cross the day of the calendar.
Personally, I think that 365 projects can be overwhelming at times, so having some guidance is a good thing. On the other hand, no one will spank you come up with a very creative interpretation to a task, or decide to swap a task with something of your own. You can use the calendar as a double duty constant reminder / idea list.
You can download the calendar here, and read a bit more about the project here.
P.S. if you want to go the regular 365 project route, have a look at our 365 project guide here.
People will shoot over 1.2 trillion photos (that’s 12 zeroes) in 2017
How many digital photos will be taken in 2017? It’s predicted there will be 7.5 billion people in the world in 2017, and about 5 billion of them will have a mobile phone. Let’s say roughly 80% of those phones have a built-in camera: around 4 billion people. And let’s say they take 10 photos per day – that’s 3,650 photos per year, per person. That adds up to more than 14 trillion photos annually (14,600,000,000,000).
Much more conservatively, if only one billion people have cameras or phones, and take less than 3 photos per day/1,000 pictures per year, that’s still 1 trillion photos captured every year.
