Canon 85mm f/1.2L II and 70-200mm f/4L IS II the latest victims in EF mount DSLR lens purge

Pentax might be clinging onto DSLRs for dear life, but if it wasn’t already clear the Canon had pretty much abandoned its DSLRs – what with the 7D line discontinued and the EOS R5 and EOS R6 effectively becoming replacements for the 5D and 6D DSLR lines respectively – I think their decision to kill off a number of popular higher-end lenses speaks volumes.

According to a report on Canon Rumors, who is also running a tally of recently discontinued Canon lenses, the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM II and the somewhat legendary Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II are now also discontinued. Unlike previously killed off EF lenses, though, at least the two new ones on the list have RF equivalents.

This is either great news or terrible news depending on how you look at it, but Nikon Japan has moved Nikon’s legendary AF-S Nikkor 200mm f/2G ED VR II lens into the list of discontinued products.

On the one hand, this might mark the beginning of Nikon’s transition away from their higher-end F-Mount equipment to put more focus into their mirrorless lens lineup. On the other, it might mean we’re finally about to see the 200mm f/2E FL ED VR that was teased in a Nikon promo a year ago.

When Nikon announced its new 105mm f/1.4E ED lens last year, it got a lot of attention. And it’s easy to see why. 105mm is an ideal portrait focal length for many photographers, and personally it’s where I find I spend the most time for portraits, too. One photographer who was particularly interested in checking it out was Texas based portrait shooter Keydrin Franklin.

Keydrin is a big fan of long lenses on location for full length portraits. His go-to lens for the past couple of years has been the Nikon 200mm f/2G ED VRII. But, this is a heavy beast and you have to get pretty far back to get the shot. Having now used the 105mm f/1.4 for a while, he put together a video during a shoot with some comparison photos to offer up his thoughts.

Shooting portraits in the middle of a road isn’t something that many photographers do. Some roads, though, are worth it, especially when they have such good looking surroundings.

For Photographer Keydrin Franklin, it’s become a speciality and it’s why many of his clients choose him. For this session, the destination was the 7th Bridge, in Fort Worth, Texas.
