A pair of white papers have been released by Canon exploring the new Canon 1DX Mark III DSLR. The two white papers cover its stills and video capabilities and come in at 59 and 21 pages long respectively. They go into a lot of detail about the overall performance, burst rates, autofocus, metering and flash, image quality, full-frame 4K, 5.5K RAW, the codecs used and more.
It’s the first day of CES 2020 so there are a few new gear announcements today. This time it’s Canon’s turn, with the official announcement and complete specs for the new Canon 1DX Mark III DSLR. The rumours have been coming thick and fast on this one ever since the development announcement in October. A spec sheet was leaked a few days ago, and today we discover if it was accurate.
The Canon EOS 1DX Mark III has been talked about quite a bit since the initial development announcement in October 2019. Canon has been not-so-strangely quiet about the specs, although a few were announced during the development announcement that has since formed the basis of the pre-order listing at various online retailers.
Now, the full specs appear to have been leaked, if this report on Canon Rumors is accurate. It shows a 20.1-megapixel sensor (same as the Mark II) with 5.4K RAW internal video capabilities. The fact that these are leaking now, especially with rumours of a Nikon announcement at CES, we might hear more official word on this one in the next few days, too.
According to a Tweet sent out by Nokishita, the upcoming Canon EOS 1DX Mark III along with the WFT-E9 wireless file transmitter have been added to Canon’s latest product list. They believe that they have been added to the list a little ahead of an official announcement in anticipation of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
That they’ve been added to the list, though, suggests that we may hear an official announcement very soon. This may happen in as little as two weeks, when CES kicks off on January 7th.
Canon’s known for being a little strange at times, but this one seems pretty weird, even for Canon. At least one silver and black 1DX Mark III appears to exist according to a low resolution leaked photo on Canon Rumors. They modified the image to remove the photographer, but it’s an odd-looking camera indeed.
Canon has made silver DSLRs before, but it’s usually their low-end entry-level kit, not their $5K+ flagship models. Other than the photo, there isn’t really a lot of information about it, of course, there isn’t really a lot of information out there about the usual black 1DX Mark III, either.
Rumours about an impending Canon 1DX Mark III have been around for a little while now, with the expectation that one would be announced before next year’s Tokyo Olympics. Now, the rumours have been proven true as Canon has indeed announced the development of a new EOS 1DX Mark III DSLR.
As its lineage would suggest, the focus of the EOS 1DX Mark III will be speed, image quality and durability. There isn’t a full spec sheet yet, as this is just a development announcement, but the information available so far sounds very promising. B&H even has a prototype unit and has posted a first look video of the new camera.
