Is there really that big of a difference between 12-Bit and 14-Bit RAW?

12-Bit used to be the standard for most raw files in the early days. Then, somewhere around 10 years or so ago, most of them started switching up to 14-bit. There are a few that still only shoot 12-bit and some give the option of both. Why? Well, the lower bit depth allows for better performance due to the reduced data throughput requirements.

We all know to shoot raw rather than 8-bit JPG, but is there that much of a big difference between 12-bit and 14-bit? In this video, photographer Michael Brietung wanted to find out. So, he shot identical images using his Canon EOS R5 in 14-bit using the mechanical shutter and 12-bit with the electronic shutter to see if he could see any difference at all.

This is the impact Sony’s New Uncompressed Raw Firmware Will Have On Your Photos

About a week ago, Sony announced that the A7RII and the A7SII will gain the ability to record uncompressed 14-bit RAW still images. This is a change vs. the previous ability to record only compressed RAW files at 14 bits.

DPreview did a thorough analysis on the difference between those two options and sure enough there are two significant factors to be considered.

Sony α7S II To Sport 14-bit RAW; Available for a7r II Via Firmware Update

The team over at AlphaUniverse shared today that Sony has announced to make the a7S II will ship with the ability to capture uncompressed 14-bit RAW still images. The feature will be user selectable by providing the photographer with the option to shoot compressed 14-bit RAW or uncompressed 14-bit RAW.[Read More…]

John Aldred is a photographer with over 20 years of experience in the portrait and commercial worlds. As well as his creative visual work, John uses 3D printing, electronics and programming to create his own photography and filmmaking tools and consults for a number of brands across the industry.

Dunja Djudjic is a multi-talented artist based in Novi Sad, Serbia. With 15 years of experience as a photographer, she specializes in capturing the beauty of nature, travel, and fine art. In addition to her photography, Dunja also expresses her creativity through writing, embroidery, and jewelry making.
