12-24mm f/2.8

Sony has officially announced the much anticipated 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens and yeah, it’s $3,000

Sony has today officially unveiled its new 12-24mm f/2.8 G Master lens, and it’s not quite as expensive as originally thought. Yes, it will be $4,000, but only if you’re in Canada. For folks in the USA, it will be $3,000. That’s better than expected but still significantly more than the $1,400 Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. But this is the world’s widest f/2.8 constant aperture full-frame zoom.

While Sony does also have a 12-24mm f/4 G lens, the new lens offers that wide 12mm focal length with a stop more light and a slightly shallower depth of field. And it has a mere 28cm minimum focus distance to help you make the most of it – when you’re not shooting landscapes. Nateinthewild has had the chance to take one out for a spin.

Rumours of an upcoming Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8GM lens started appearing in February, and it seemed like it would be a pretty attractive option over 3rd party alternatives like the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art, offering an extra couple of mm on the wide end. In March we saw the rumoured $4,000 price tag – almost three times as much as the Sigma.

Now it appears we may finally soon have an official announcement, as Nokishita Tweets that the model “SEL1224GM” has been added to Sony’s latest product list. They expect that an announcement from Sony will come at some point this month.

Sony’s 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens to be delayed and will cost an eye-watering $4,000

In February, it was rumoured that Sony was planning to release a new 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens at some point during the summer. The thought process at that time was that it would be a little wider than the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for Sony E mount, but at likely a significantly higher price – possibly double.

Now, according to Sony Alpha Rumours, it looks like the Sony will cost almost three times as much as the Sigma, and the announcement is going to be delayed, too. SAR says they’ve received a tip from a reliable source that the anticipated 12-24mm f/2.8 GM lens announcement has been delayed as a result of… wait for it… Yes, that’s right, the coronavirus pandemic.

Looks like July will be exciting for Sony shooters, at least in terms of third-party lenses. After Tamron’s announcement, it seems that Sigma is also about to launch something new. It’s not just one Sony FE lens, but four of them: two zooms and two primes. They include 35mm f/1.2, 45mm f/2.8, 12-24mm f/2.8, and 24-70mm f/2.8, and they are reportedly coming later this month.
