Arducam announces new 108-megapixel USB camera module for IoT and Machine Vision application

For those developing their own DIY cameras, the various modules that pop up on the market can be a lot of fun to experiment with. And one of the biggest names in camera modules for experimenting with is Arducam. Only a couple of months after releasing their 64-megapixel camera module for the Raspberry Pi, they’ve now announced a new 108-megapixel camera module and this one runs on USB 3.0.

The new 108-megapixel camera development kit is designed primarily for use with IoT and Machine Vision applications, hence the USB 3.0 connection, which provides a lot more versatility than being locked into a Raspberry Pi. So, you can use it on just about any system you can add a USB 3.0 port to – including your desktop computer!

Samsung lets us look behind the curtain at their “pro-grade” ISOCELL HM3 smartphone camera sensor tech

Announced in mid-January, Samsung’s ISOCELL HM3 108-megapixel sensor was both a “wow!” and a “wtf?” moment for smartphone cameras. It’s an insane resolution for a smartphone, based on the raw pixel count alone, but it offers a lot of potential advantages for computational photography.

It’s only been released in the Samsung Galaxy S21 ultra so far, and it’s not yet made it into any other brand’s smartphones (but there are likely a few on the way). But Samsung has released a video “introducing” the sensor (4 months after its release) going into detail about how the sensor actually works.

Samsung Galaxy S11 code suggests it can shoot 8K 30fps video

It looks like the race is on. After Xiaomi’s code was torn apart recently, suggesting that they’re working on a phone capable of shooting 8K 30fps video, it looks like Samsung’s S11 may be capable of the same. The team at XDA Developers, the same team that delved into the Xiaomi, has found hints that the S11 will bring 8K video after looking at the latest Samsung Camera App (presumably one that fixes this problem, too).

They do stress that just because evidence may exist in an Android Package (APK) file does not mean that it will necessarily come, as these features are currently unimplemented and may be pulled at any point in the future. But that it’s appeared now in two major competing manufacturers smartphones does seem to suggest that it’s on the way at some point.

Xiaomi recently teased a new smartphone containing Samsung’s new 108-megapixel sensor, the Xiomi Mi Mix Alpha, although this phone won’t be going into mass production, and it’s not quite ready for release yet anyway. But now they’ve gone and announced the CC9 Pro, which also features the 108-megapixel sensor and is now already for sale in China.

Although Samsung isn’t the first to embed their own 108-megapixel sensor inside one of their phones, they may prove to produce the best implementation. That implementation is said to be coming in the Samsung Galaxy S11 flagship phone to be announced next year. And not only that, but it will also see a second camera with a 5x optical periscope-style telephoto lens.
