Photographer uses AI software Dall-E to sharpen blurred photograph

A photographer has successfully demonstrated how he sharpened an out-of-focus photograph using the text-to-image AI software Dall-E 2. Macro shots posted to his Twitter feed of a ladybird show the transformation.

Photographer Nicholas Sherlock shared his experiment with YouTuber Micael Widell, who was obviously blown away by the transformation. He even went so far as to state that “this could be the death of photography”. Trigger warning: video contains dogmatic opinions about the impending doom of photography.

This camera can record sound without a microphone, it just sees the vibrations

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University appeared to have solved the age-old problem of microphone bleed-through, using just a couple of cheap video cameras. Instead of recording sound using microphones, the cameras see the vibrations created by individual instruments and then translate that back into sound waves.

No matter how good microphones are, there are always going to be drawbacks when recording multiple instruments. In order to be able to edit the sound in post-production of just one instrument, they first have to be isolated. That’s why recording studios are set up usually with more than one room, or the instrument tracks are recorded separately and layered one on top of the other.

Is Photoshop ruining photography or is it actually helping it?

This is a topic that I see posted on social media every single day. It’s usually not a discussion of the actual topic, though. More often than not, it’s bundled up in a comment like “This isn’t photography!” or “Fake! You’ve Photoshopped this!”. Yeah, it’s a pretty one-sided conversation a lot of the time. But photographer and educator Blake Rudis explores the topic quite in-depth in this video.

The criticisms of the use of Photoshop in photography often come from the self-proclaimed “purists” who believe that every image has to look how it looks right out of the camera (which still has digital post-processing applied, btw) and there’s very little that seems to dissuade them from their beliefs. But ultimately, does it really matter what other people think about your use (or lack) of Photoshop?

Is microcontrast your favourite photography blogger’s favourite myth?

I write a series called the Glossary of Photographer’s Woo over on Medium, and am delighted to be here on DIY Photography to talk about microcontrast.

Lens design has improved pretty steadily over the last hundred years. That is to say, modern lenses resolve finer detail, render colours and contrast more deeply, and are generally more free from the defects of spherical distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. These defects are all easily measurable, and in art reproduction and scientific photography, they are probably very important. But in creating art? To many photographers, our lenses have been more than good enough for a long time.

How to shoot a clean and simple coloured fill portrait in the studio

Sometimes you just want a clean and quick setup to start a shoot off the right way. Sure, you may have a ton of creative ideas in store for later on in the day, but they may be new ideas you’ve never tried before or they may be more experimental. If that’s the case, I always find it smart to start a shoot with a tried and true setup that’s not too tricky to do, quick to set up and provides great shots each and every time.

That way, the team knows that whatever happens from here on out with the more experimental work, we’ve already bagged some killer images and everybody is positive about the setups to come.

A good photography practice should consider all elements in the creation of an image, from technique and lighting to mastery of gear and employment of the right tools for the job. It is imperative that a competitive photographer knows their gear and knows what gear to use.

Lighting setup: Indoor swimwear shoot

Shooting swimwear outside in natural light is nearly always the best solution, after all, the bright, crisp sunshine is an easy-win when it comes to making swimwear look good. But what if an outdoor shoot simply isn’t practical or even possible due to location and of course weather?

In this article I’ll discuss a simple indoor setup that can be created in almost any sized space and with standard kit. This setup isn’t trying to synthesise daylight indoors like I’ve done before, but it is about recreating that feeling of an outdoor shoot and I’ll share a couple of tricks I employ to do just that.

Creepy AI reconstructs your portrait based only on your voice

Turning speech into text has become so common that i’s a part of almost every smartphone. But have you ever thought about turning your speech into a portrait? Researchers have, and they’ve even made it possible.

Artificial intelligence scientists at MIT’S Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have created AI that turns short snippets of audio speech recording into a human face. As if this weren’t both stunning and creepy enough, the results are actually fairly accurate, too!

Did you know that “ghost photography” was once a thing? Here’s how it was (probably) done

Regardless of one’s beliefs in spirits or the afterlife, we’d all like to feel a connection to those we’ve lost. In the mid-1800s, one of those connections was through the form of photography, thanks to photographer William H. Mulmer, an amateur photographer based in Boston who claimed to actually be able to photograph ghosts.

During the American Civil War, belief in spiritualism grew. People believed that through the use of a medium one could contact their dearly departed. So being able to capture them with a camera didn’t seem that far-fetched to many people at the time –  including Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of assassinated American president, Abraham Lincoln.

In this article, I am planning to discuss the way I use my DJI Mini 2, a cheap drone that many people dismiss as being a toy for beginners in order to get photos and animations that stand out. While spreading my belief that with great knowledge you can overcome the limitations of your gear & budget.
