We are surrounded by commercials, promotional images and all sorts of advertising material. Most of us take it for granted and doesn’t think much about the message these materials send. But an L.A. based photographer, Raffael Dickreuter, paid attention to advertising campaigns of famous brands and noticed something very negative about them – they lack diversity.

Erik Almas recreates a stolen 1664 painting using only stock photos
Recreating a 17th century painting in the 21st century by using only stock photos would be an interesting project under any circumstances. But doing this with “The Concert” is a more than just interesting. First, it is one of the iconic paintings of Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch painter most people know by “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. And second, the story behind this painting is quite mysterious, since it went missing and it has never been found. All this makes Erik’s recreation of the painting even more valuable.
Photographers recreate classic Top Gun scene with upside down jet to test a photography myth
For anybody who’s seen the legendary movie Top Gun, there’s one scene often sticks out in the mind. In it, a fictional MiG-28 is cruising through the air. Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Goose (Anthony Edwards) fly above it, inverted, in an F-14 Tomcat. Goose then proceeds to photograph the pilot of the MiG with a polaroid camera.
Advertising photographer Blair Bunting wanted to try to recreate this. Firstly, to see if it was even possible, and also to see what the shot might have looked like. So, he teamed up with the Patriots Jet Team, as well as fellow photographer filmmakers Jaron Schneider and Toby Harriman of Planet Unicorn Productions. Then, they set to work.
These artists recreated lost and destroyed artwork using Photoshop and stock images
Whether the work we create is digital, or a little more tangible, it’s an inevitable consequence that some of it will be lost or destroyed. In this short series of videos released by Adobe, we see four of them recreated using Photoshop and stock imagery.
Rembrandt’s The Storm on the Sea of Galilee went missing in 1990 after thieves disguised as police officers broke into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and stole an eximated $500 million worth of paintings. In this video, we see it recreated digitally by digital artist Ankur Patar.
US Marine photographer recreates iconic war photography with Star Wars action figures
We just posted about Felix’s Sandtroopers project yesterday, but is it too soon to post another Star Wars miniature related project? We don’t think so, so here’s a behind the scenes look into photographer Matthew Callahan’s essay, Galactic Warfighters.
As a US Marine, Matthew serves as a combat correspondent, giving him special insight into war photography that many of us will never be able to experience first hand. In his Galactic Warfighters series, Matthew aims to humanise the faceless soldiers of the Star Wars universe by combining the worlds of science fiction with real world war photography scenes.
Watch as Rankin recreates one of David Bailey’s iconic photographs with Bailey’s help
When it comes to the names of those that have changed the photography world over the years, fashion photographer David Bailey is often one of the first that comes to mind. Leading the fashion photography of the 60s with cohorts Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy, they captured and created the “Swinging London”, and set the stage for things to come.
Coming back to today, we have John Rankin Waddell (aka Rankin), a high profile fashion photographer based in London, who in 2008 made a documentary entitled “Seven Photographs that Changed Fashion” in which creates his own tributes to iconic images by Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Cecil Beaton, and Erwin Blumenfeld.
Photographer Recreates Renaissance Paintings Using Auto Mechanics As Models
Paying homage to the great masters of art is not an easy task. Photographer Freddy Fabris took a stab at it. However, paying homage does not mean duplicate, and Freddy added his own touch to the painting. Instead of simply recreating The Last Supper, Creation Of Adam and The Anatomy Lesson with Renaissance models, Freddy used auto mechanics models, settings and locations. The results are smile inducing.
Couple recreates ‘101 Dalmatians’ scene for their engagement photos
Most engagement shoots I see are just a set of pretty photos, taken at one of the photographer’s usual “good” spots, and aren’t really unique to the couple. Some couples, however, decide they want something different, something that reflects a bit of who they are – and spend a great deal of time trying to come up with such an idea.
For Corinne Jones, on the other hand, there was no doubt in her mind what theme she wanted for her engagement photos – the scene from ‘101 Dalmatians’ where Roger meets Anita and Pongo meets Perdita.
Enlisting Corinne’s cousin photographer and their dogs, the couple created a set of viral photos that definitely stands out amongst other engagement photo shoots.
Battle Zone: Photographer Recreates ‘War of the Worlds’ Using Scale Models
Lyn Caudle is a fan of The War of the Worlds, so much so that the photographer and visual effects supervisor decided to recreate the massive carnage in his hometown of Dallas. Unfortunately, nothing was actually blown up or destroyed during the process.
After creating lifelike replicas of the “Martian war machines” from both the 1953 and 2005 versions of the film, Caudle set about compositing them with scene from his favorite city.
iPhone Helps Photographer Recreate Iconic Pop Culture Scenes In This Ingenious Photo Project
Not too long ago, François Dourlen, a history professor from France, had the idea to snap a silly picture of the Napoleon statue in Cherbourg, in which he replaced the statue with a picture of My Little Pony that he pulled up on his iPhone. The amateur photographer took the photo as a joke to share among friends, but had so much fun making the original, he was inspired to make another. As positive feedback began pouring in, Douren made another and before you know it, he had an entire collection of these fun, pop culture inspired photos. [Read More…]
