In the summer of past few years, I have been leading a photography workshop in Disco Bay, in collaboration with Iceland Photo Tours. Disko Bay is a bay in the Western coast of Greenland, with Ilulissat Icefjord located adjacent to it.
Ilulissat Icefjord, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, with the glacier flows rate of 20 to 35 m per day, resulting in around 20 billion tons of icebergs calved off and many of them drifting around Disko Bay.
When I recently got a call to go photograph Ontario’s largest indoor rock climbing gym, my first though was:
Yes, of course I’ll do it!
My second though was: How the heck am I going to do it!
Do you know that feeling when you are watching a sit-com on TV and you start thinking…I swear the Simpson’s already did this…? That is basically what I feel like when I am facing a tough lighting challenge…I swear David Hobby already did this…!
And yep – he did – back in 2010 in the Strobist article “On Assignment: Earth Treks, Pt. 1″.
I totally admit that I basically stole appropriated David Hobby’s approach to lighting a giant indoor rock climbing gym, but I think the approach to lighting a huge, dark indoor space using a combination of studio strobes, small strobes (speedlites) and ambient light is still worth further discussion.
Of all the types of things I photograph, shooting food probably comes the closest to being a full-blown DIY project. There’s a lot going on– from lighting and composing to styling and shooting, food photography is almost always a production. But regardless of whether you are shooting food for a big publishing client or for a small cookbook of your old family recipes, the process of capturing food at its most flattering remains the same.
I had the Mamiya RB67 and Pentax 67 on my medium-format wanted list for many years now, but I simply could not justify the price tag or bare the unfortunate realization that either camera would sit lonely and unused on a shelf. That all changed December 2022 when I decided to grab a non-working RB67 as a Christmas present for my eldest brother. Sure, you must be thinking jeez this guy is incredibly cheap if he gives people broken Christmas presents but boy you would be wrong.
Although meters in digital cameras have come a very long way and become extremely advanced, metering with film often isn’t so simple. With digital, even if your camera’s meter isn’t that great, you can quickly and easily see the results on the histogram to know if they’re right and adjust accordingly. But for film, we need to be a little more sure.

The M1 mirrorless camera from YI Technology was one of the biggest surprises at this year’s Photokina A company known for Action cameras, dash cams and home monitoring devices was now getting into the “real camera” market. With the way things are right now, it’s a very brave move.
