These are the safety tips that every model and photographer should know

This is an opinion piece and considering I am not a lawyer or work in law enforcement, this is all just advice from experience. Always check the legal and health legislation in the area you are in. Seek professional advice if you feel you have been the victim of a crime.

I’ve been swimming in this industry since the spring of 1997, ultimately on both sides of the lens. I have witnessed titans rise and fall with the decimation of film in favor of digital pixels. I’ve taken part in the tidal wave of new and incredible talent from around the world thanks to affordable cameras and computers. I watched with mixed emotions at the absolute thrashing that Photoshop and the rise of digital art gave to an industry that overnight transformed successful businesses with 30 years of experience into dinosaurs on the brink of extinction.

In short, I’ve not been around forever, but I’ve been around long enough to earn a couple of my stripes, and seen some difficult things.

I have been lucky enough to witness the start of a movement that has begun to change everything.

The rise of #MeToo has really shifted the dialogue around safety. It’s generations overdue, but at least it’s starting. I wish it had been a thing when I was 13 and a baby in this field, but alas, life isn’t always fair. So, I’m going to keep it going. Each line on my face, each grey hair, and every sleepless night comes from some lesson or experience lived through. Such is the inevitability of aging.

Australian music photographer admits sexual harassment after accusations from 100+ women

Australian music photographer Jack Stafford has recently been accused of sexual misconduct. Over the course of just four days, more than 100 women to come forward and gave statements about his behavior. Eventually, he issued a public apology and admitted: “I am an abuser.”

World Press Photo disinvited photographer from the awards ceremony over “inappropriate behavior”

For the first time in its 62-year-long history, World Press Photo Foundation disinvited a photographer from the annual awards ceremony. Andrew Quilty won third place in this years’ contest in the Spot News, Stories category, but he didn’t attend the show. The reason is alleged reports of his “inappropriate behavior.”

Woman got slammed for tweeting a photo of her “fine as s**t” doctor without his consent

After she recently posted a photo of her doctor on Twitter, a woman received sharp criticism from the community. Twitter user @purplegodesss secretly took a photo of her dermatologist and posted it to the social network without his consent. To make things worse, she “sexualized” him, calling him “fine as s**t,” in a Tweet that quickly went viral.

For its 2018 Swimsuit Issue, Sports Illustrated has taken a path quite different from its traditional route. For the project titled “In Her Words,” the magazine didn’t pose models in swimsuits. Instead, they’ve launched fully nude, unedited, black and white images of models, with messages to society written on their bodies. The project features women of all shapes and sizes, and it has caused a lot of reaction, both positive and negative.

After banning Terry Richardson, Vogue publisher Condé Nast is cutting ties with another two famous fashion photographers: Mario Testino and Bruce Weber. The reason behind the decision is the same – the photographers have been accused of sexual abuse.

With the #MeToo movement becoming bigger, the number of sexual abuse accusations is rising. And according to recent claims against Weber and Testino, abuse hasn’t affected female models alone. These photographers have been accused of sexual misconduct by male models and assistants.

As the #MeToo movement is gaining momentum, we’re hearing more and more stories from the people who underwent sexual harassment. Some photographers were accused, or even banned from working because of the accusations of sexual misconduct.

As an attempt to fight and prevent sexual harassment, three Canadian models have started a closed Facebook group. Here, both female and male models can submit the information about Canadian photographers. This way, they can warn each other and point out to the photographers who should be avoided.

Sexual harassment in the wedding industry

This week our news feeds were flooded with two simple words: #MeToo.

This trending hashtag has raised awareness regarding how devastatingly widespread sexual harassment and assault are in today’s society. The campaign began after activist Tarana Burke launched metoo.support, a website that supported and amplified the voices of survivors of sexual abuse, assault, and exploitation, and Alyssa Milano later shared the following: If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet. (@AlyssaMilano)
