Does this beautiful timelapse really show Europa and Io orbiting around Jupiter?

It’s funny how many things are being called out as fakes lately. It seems that most people think everything that’s posted to social media these days has been made by some kid in their bedroom with a copy of After Effects or Blender. The latest victim to the cries of “FAKE!” is a timelapse sequence created from a number of still photographs shot by Cassini back of the moons Io and Europa passing Jupiter’s surface in January 2001.

The video was created by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA-JPL) scientist Kevin M. Gill by combining hundreds of images shot by Cassini into a timelapse sequence. Despite the images being created 21 years ago, the timelapse video wasn’t created or posted to social media until 2018. More recently than that, it’s been posted to Reddit in r/Damnthatsinteresting with the caption “Timelapse of Europa and Io orbiting Jupiter captured by the Cassini probe” but commenters don’t believe it’s real. But are they right?

Watch the moment amateur astronomer captures rare footage of asteroid striking Jupiter

This is the moment that retired engineer Jose Luis Pereira captured footage of a piece of space rock the size of London clock tower Big Ben as it crashed into the planet Jupiter earlier this week. NASA shares stunningly detailed photos of Jupiter’s giant moon Ganymede

Juno spacecraft has brought us some of the most incredible photos of Jupiter over the last few years. It recently flew close to Jupiter’s giant moon Ganymede, and it’s the closest any spacecraft flew to it in more than 20 years. During its flyby, Juno took some photos, and as usual – it didn’t disappoint. The first two images were sent back to Earth and they give us a wonderful and detailed look at the icy mammoth.

This is what the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction looks like from a moon-orbiting probe

We have seen a few great photos of the “Great Conjunction” between Jupiter and Saturn. There is even one photo with the International Space Station splitting the space right between the two planets.

But, this is a first. As you may recall, on December 21st, we have a once in 800 years event when Jupiter and Saturn appeared especially close in the night sky. Unlike any earthly photos that we have seen, NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured a stunner image from space.

The great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn has been all over the news over the last few days. And if you were lucky enough to have clear skies, you could have observed it or take some photos. Photographer Jason De Freitas used this rare opportunity to take some photos, and he created something quite unique. He managed to capture the ISS trail between Jupiter and Saturn during the conjunction – and he did it on film.

Hubble has captured a beautifully sharp new image of Jupiter and Europa

It’s crazy to think that the Hubble Space Telescope has been floatin’ around in space for over 30 years now. But since launch day on April 24th, 1990, it’s shown us some incredible sights that we wouldn’t otherwise ever get to see. Recently, it sent back a new image of Jupiter with its moon Europa right beside it, with an incredible level of detail and beauty.

Astrophotographers: The Moon, Venus and Jupiter will form a smiley face in the sky next month

UPDATE: there will be no smiley in the sky tonight. What we thought of as a smiley, will be a rare conjunction (close pairing) of Venus and Mercury.

As Forbes points out, on May 22, 2020  you will see the bright planet Venus about 10º above the horizon. Look just beneath it and you’ll see the tiny red dot of the planet Mercury. They will be just 0.5º apart

It’s almost like a great cosmic “It’ll be ok”, but next month, on May 16th, to be precise, a crescent moon will sit in the sky beneath Jupiter and Venus to form a smiley face amongst the stars. The scientific term for such an event is an occultation and in this case, it happens when the moon is positioned between Earth and Venus.

The timing of such an event might seem like a sign from above, but they’re not as uncommon as you might think. It was visible in 2008 from Asia and 2012 from Australia to North America. But they are easy to miss, only being visible for a short period after sunset.
