Early on in my photographic career, I spent literally thousands of hours photographing subjects in front of white walls. This was an incredibly popular look in the 90’s as we moved away from the grey and brown cloudy backdrops of the 1980’s, but times are changing once again as we tire of the stark and clinical look of a pure white backdrop.

Two DIY backdrops that will save you both money and space

If you have a limited space for a backdrop in your apartment, Rachel and Daniel from Mango Street have just the thing for you. In this video, they show you two DIY backdrops they made and attached to a beam in their flat. They’re both easy to make and quick to set up whenever you need a backdrop. They don’t take too much space, and on top of it all – they’re budget-friendly, too. The first one will cost you around $116, and the other is as cheap as $16.

When I started photography I was very interested in learning everything I can about studio photography. Obviously, I didn’t have a studio back then, so I needed to work with what I had to create photographs that looked just as good as their studio-taken counterparts.

Here are three different backdrops I used to create a high-end feeling to my photos. You can find them all in your house. Plus an additional cool background you can use which is made out of tarpaulin.

Laya Gerlock was in need of a backdrop for a Senior portrait shoot. As it just so happened to be it was his girlfriend that he was shooting so it was all the more important.

Instead if going with a store bought backdrop or even with the heavy DIY muslin backdrop, he opted for a thinner, smaller fabric which fit the smaller scale of the shoot. The total cost: $3.

I don’t shoot much in the studio anymore, but when I used to, I had quite a few different backdrops. They were a pain to store because if you just lie the rolls down on the ground or a shelf horizontally (the most convenient way to store them), they’ll typically develop a “flat side” which turns into obvious bumps and creases when you unroll it on your stand. So vertical storage is a must.

Commercially available vertical background storage options can get quite expensive, but in this video, Scott Choucino shows us how he made his own DIY storage racks – well, with the help of a tall friend – for his studio to store his array of background rolls.

A COVID-19 DIY Project: Quick access to many seamless backdrops

I have been looking to increase my image sales from my headshot sessions. I decided before the COVID-19 crisis that I wanted to develop a portfolio of headshots with colorful backdrops, instead of my standard white and gray. I wanted to have quick access to all my seamless backdrops, so I could transition to new colors and give my clients different looks.

The challenge I faced was that swapping out rolls felt too slow, and I was going to have more than three colors, and my green backdrop is wider than the others. The standard three-roll holders wouldn’t work for me.
