It seems like Canon is about to focus more on mirrorless cameras over the following year. Before we get to see the two new mirrorless cameras, the company might launch another iteration of the EOS M5. According to the rumors, the EOS M5 Mark II will feature some improvements over the previous model, such as 4K video.

Photokina in 2019 is cancelled – The next one is in 2020
Well, this will come as a bit of a shock, especially to all of those people who decided to skip Photokina this year in order to attend the next scheduled Photokina in May 2019. The German Photo Industry Association (PIV) has now decided that there will be no Photokina 2019. Instead, the new annual show cycle will begin in 2020 – just like many of us suggested they should’ve done from the beginning.
From next year, the world’s largest photography show, Photokina, becomes an annual event
Photokina is the highlight of many photographers calendars. It’s the largest photography trade event in the world. It’s so big, that it only happens once every two years, in Cologne, Germany. But that is all set to change. Photokina is now becoming an annual event. DIYP went to the last Photokina in September 2016. The next one is still scheduled September 2018. But after that, we won’t have to wait two years.
Not only is it turning into an annual event, but as of 2019, it’s also shifting to much earlier in the year. Traditionally, Photokina has been held in September, but after September 2018, we only have to wait a mere 8 months for the next Photokina in May 2019. And it’ll happen annually in May each year from that point forward.
Canon, Elinchrom and Profoto rumoured pulling out of Photokina – Elinchrom first to confirm
We’ve been hearing rumours since The Photography Show that several brands may be pulling out of this year’s Photokina in September. Big brands including Canon, Elinchrom and Profoto. Of course, none of them would confirm anything at the time, but Elinchrom has now put out a statement. They are the first to confirm that they are pulling out of Photokina 2018, but they may not be the last.
Update: Photokina organisers have confirmed to DIYP that both Profoto and Canon will be an attendance at Photokina 2018
Breaking: After 70 years the Photokina trade show shuts down indefinitely
The organisers of Photokina at the Koelnmesse have just announced that Photokina, the Biennial photography trade show in Cologne, Germany, has come to an end after 70 years. The show had sent out emails to exhibitors this morning, letting them know what was going on, and then announced the news publicly via press release.
They say that this hasn’t been directly caused by the coronavirus pandemic, although it did cause the cancellation of Photokina 2020, stating that “the imaging market was already subject to strong upheaval, with annual declines in the double digits”. 2020 simply amplified this effect and has led to their current decision.
Irix teases new “Dragonfly” lens to be announced at Photokina
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a new lens from Swiss lens company, Irix. In fact, while they’ve been adding a lot to their Edge filter system, we haven’t seen a new lens since Photokina 2016 when they showed off the 45mm f/1.4 – a lens that still doesn’t exist.
But it looks like they’re teasing a new one for an announcement at Photokina 2018, though. At least, that’s what these three short videos suggest. All we really know is that it’s called “Dragonfly”, but it might be a 150mm macro lens.
Breaking: Photokina 2020 in Cologne, Germany has been cancelled – Next one in 2022
Well, after The Photography Show and NAB, it was pretty obvious that Photokina was going to meet the same fate soon enough. Despite all three initially saying that they were going ahead one day shy of a month ago, and Photokina just a couple of weeks ago saying they see no reason to shut down, all three are now cancelled. Ok, technically TPS is postponed, but we’ll see.
Photokina organisers, Koelnmesse, issued a statement announcing the cancellation of the show, with the next event to be held in 2022 (not 2021). So, it seems like their new annual schedule (first announced in 2017) is being delayed yet again.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 released with AI Organizer to pick out your best photos
Well, there’s a new version of Adobe Photoshop Elements, as well as Adobe Premiere Elements. The 2018 versions of both come with some rather neat upgrades. There’s also new Adobe Elements Organizer 2018, which features an “Auto-Curate” facility to help pick your best photos for you.
While many have already jumped on the Photoshop & Lightroom CC package, Elements still has its place. Not everybody needs all the features of full blown Photoshop. And not everybody wants to tie themselves into a subscription contract, either. And once you add Premiere Pro into the mix, that subscription gets expensive really quickly. Not ideal for those who just want to make quick family snaps and movies.
New photography show coming to Germany – Could Photopia replace Photokina?
It’s been a sad tale over the last few years for Photokina. After their last great show in 2016, it was announced in 2017 that Photokina would be shrinking in size and duration and shifting over to an annual schedule from 2018 and a new month from 2019. Well, they still had their show in 2018, but then 2019’s show didn’t happen, and neither did 2020’s (for obvious reasons), ultimately resulting in Photokina calling it quits and deciding to end the show for good.
Now it seems that there’s a newcomer to Europe’s photography show circuit, also taking place in Germany, in the form of Phototopia. Unlike Photokina, which was in Cologne, this new show is happening in Hamburg, according to their website, and the first event is planned for September 23-26th, 2021.
Camera industry is still decreasing with 24% drop in 2018
With Canon and Nikon announcing their full frame mirrorless camera, 2018 was an exciting year when it comes to camera industry. But how has this affected the overall results in gear manufacturing and sales? All this and more was explored in this video by LensVid. While the previous year brought us some long-awaited novelties: it seems that the market is still declining.
