There’s light painting, and then there’s this light-painted stop motion film produced by Photographer Darren Pearson. The film is a light-painted Western called ‘Fiat Lux’ and was filmed in classic Western locations such as disused gold mines and abandoned homesteads around Darren’s native California.

Shooting stop motion animations or even timelapse can be difficult enough without adding something as already complex as light painting into the mix. Light painting just on its own can be something of a challenge when you’re trying to draw something for the camera over the course of a long exposure.
But for photographer Darren Pearson, it’s no bother at all. He excels at creating light painting animations, and we’ve featured him a couple of times before. She Lights the Night slipped by us when it was posted to YouTube a few months ago, but now we’ve seen it and we’re sharing it with you because it’s awesome. It was created using 1,012 individually light painted long exposures.
It starts out a lot like most timelapses, a sweeping landscape, some cool star trails, a trip to a southern California desert and then BA-BAM! An illuminated skeleton pops up out of the ground and takes us on an adventure through the desert as he morphs into a menagerie of animals right before our eyes–no CGI required.
Lightspeed is photographer, Darren Pearson (aka Darius Twin’s), moving creation that combines stop motion photography with his mad light painting skills to create a radiant animation.
