This simple Smart Object trick solves “Blend If” transparency issues in Photoshop

Photoshop’s Blend If sliders are wonderfully useful and powerful tools. They allow us to seamlessly blend two images together with ease, or knock out elements of our images completely. But, they’re not without their quirks. One of those quirks is kind of a double-edged sword. The perk, and problem is that it takes adjustments you make to the image into account before it applies the blend.

This can be very handy when merging two different landscape images together, for example. But it can be completely useless for other purposes. In this 90 second video, Jesús Ramirez from the Photoshop Training Channel shows us a workaround for this. It’s a trick I often use myself for images here on DIYP, especially when compositing product photos onto new backgrounds.

How to create winter portraits in the studio with Photoshop using real snow

It’s that time of year when the snowy portraits come back in a big way. It can often be difficult to predict exactly when the snow will happen in many parts of the world, though. And even if you do know that snow is coming, it can sometimes be impossible to shoot in comfortably.

The default backup is to shoot in the studio and create fake snow in Photoshop, but it doesn’t always look realistic. And that’s how photographer Brandon Adam feels. The composite art of Jason Hahn

Jason Hahn is a photographer and digital artist living in Phoenix Arizona.

In his own words “[I’ve been there] for most of my life, with my wife and three sons. I operate a family owned Marble and Granite company for a living in north Phoenix, but that doesn’t stop me from immersing myself into my passion for digital art and photography when I find the time.

I started out as a pencil artist first before photography. Drawing and painting was something I did as a kid and never stopped loving, but after I got married and started to have kids, I had to put the pencil down. Around 2002-2003, I received a copy of Photoshop from my father in-law. I dabbled with it for a while and used it to digitally paint some of my old comic book drawings, but having young children, I just didn’t have time for it.

This technique will save you hours of guesswork matching saturation in composites

When compositing, saturation is one of the more difficult things to really judge with the naked eye. It can be difficult to get things just right, and we can waste hours tweaking things until we get something we’re happy with. Sometimes, we just need a little assistance.

That’s where this quick Photoshop tip from digital artist Antti Karppinen comes in. With the two images on your canvas, all you need is a single adjustment layer to show you the saturation levels throughout your image. Then you can adjust with confidence, knowing that they’ll match perfectly.

Photographer dad composites his kids into the most hilarious scenarios

Usually, it’s a gradual transition, you go from zero kids to one kid to two. Gives you time to get used to the havoc. But sometimes, God blesses you with twins, going from zero to two (or rather zero to hundred) in a split of a second. Hair is one of those parts of retouching that I least look forward to. It just takes so long to get things looking perfect. Especially if the image is from a shoot that didn’t have a hair stylist on set. If only I could shoot bald models, and composite hair in post, that would make life so much easier.
