5 Common Mistakes Beginners Make When They Share Photos Online

I look at more photos online every single day than most people go through in a month. It’s part of the job, scouring 500px and the Internet at large for the best photography out there and then writing about it—and over the course of 5 years doing this or something similar, I’ve learned some things.

I’ve learned what will get you published, what will get you noticed, what ‘exposure’ is really worth, and what topics are so dead-horse beaten that they make me nauseous every time I see an article about them (did you know that you should NEVER EVER EVER give away your photos for free… except, of course, when you should… duh).

I’ve also come to recognize the most common mistakes photographers—both newbies and, surprisingly, advanced shooters—make when they begin sharing their work online. Below are the 5 most common mistakes I see, and if you’d like to have your work noticed and appreciated, NOT doing the 5 things below is a fantastic place to start.

Xencelabs, a company that I really appreciate in the graphics tablets scene, just announced a new product: the Xencelabs Pen Display 24 Studio Series. This 24-inch graphics tablet display builds upon elements from their first generation of graphics tablets. The Quick Keys are still a prominent feature, but to stand out from the crowd, the hottest features include silent cooling and glare-free display. Xencelabs unveiled this product at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today. Should we take this as a hint from Xencelabs that they are marketing predominantly toward 3D modeling, or is this a tablet for all creatives?[Read More…]

Here at DIYP, we’ve had a lot of fun playing with ChatGPT and asking it all sorts of stuff. Udi asked it to make a PRD for a perfect mirrorless camera, with some interesting results. I recently started testing it for crochet patterns and I have yet to make some stuff from AI-generated instructions. But worry not, the articles are still 100% human-generated. :)

Photographer Gavin Hoey wanted to know if ChatGPT could write a video script in his own style and give him instructions for a photoshoot. In this fun video from Adorama TV, Gavin shows you what the chatbot came up with.

It’s December again, which means lots of us are sitting there wondering what to buy for ourselves or the photographer in our lives this holiday season. We’ve been saving up all year to get that something special, but we don’t want to deal with in-store queues – or maybe we’ve just slacked on our Christmas shopping this year. We want to stay at home where it’s nice and warm and see what we can find online that gets delivered straight to our door!

So, this means it’s time for the 2022 DIYP Holiday Gift Guides. We’re on Day 3, so it’s time to look at lights. These are some of our favourite new LED lights and flashes that have been released over the last year. Keep visiting back this week as we release our other guides, including cameras, lenses, tripods, sliders & gimbals, and accessories and gadgets.

There are three avenues for publishing a photobook — traditional publishers, independent publishers (also known as indie presses), and self-publishing. This article will take a deep dive into indie presses. They are known for printing highly creative, beautifully crafted books that are as unique in design as the art that comprises their pages. The book becomes an extension of the photographers’ project — an art object in its own right.

Portuguese photographer André Boto has won the title of overall winner of the 2022 edition of the Creative Photo Awards, the competition dedicated to artistic and creative photography at the Siena Awards. The image shines the spotlight on pollution in a clever and thought-provoking way.

“Pollution is a real problem that affects us all,” says  Boto about his image titled ‘The False illusion’. “There are often attempts to camouflage or minimize this problem,” he continues, “the big manufacturing companies and the powers that be try to hide an issue that is real and brings sequels, creating the illusion that it is a distant problem, but in fact, we are already facing it today and leave with a great disadvantage to solve it at this moment.”

DJI hasn’t officially said a thing about the DJI Mini 3 Pro yet, but Dutch retailer TopRC seems to have jumped the gun a little early, sending a listing live and possibly confirming the rumoured announcement date. If not the specific date, a screw-up like this usually does indicate that an official announcement is imminent. So, it’s going to be soon. But in the listing, they put the complete specs and even listed a price.

The listing, as spotted by DroneDJ, has since been redacted, although it still pops up in search results. Clicking it in the search results just takes you to the page showing all DJI products that they stock although Google still has the page cached. Regardless, we have the complete description of the drone now and its capabilities – and it appears it does have rear collision avoidance, after all.
