Canon is adding vehicle-tracking AF to the EOS R5 and R6 but it comes with a catch

One of the great new features of the Canon EOS R3 (and the Nikon Z9, while we’re talking about it) was the addition of vehicle tracking. Designed primarily for sports shooters covering motor racing, it allows the camera to lock onto vehicles as they hurl themselves around the track at ungodly speeds. Well, that feature is coming to the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 on December 2nd via a firmware update.

It has a small problem, though. According to Canon, “general passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles may not be detected”. There’s no indication as to why, but it seems that non-racing vehicles “may not” be detected. This is perhaps going to be a little tricky for motorcycles, given that street bikes and racing bikes are pretty much identical to each other, especially in Superbike racing where production bikes are used.

Have you ever stopped to wonder why DSLR’s with large sized sensors are called Full-Frame? I must admit that up until now I hadn’t really questioned it, but while technology and in particular digital cameras can include a bunch of somewhat confusing terms and descriptions, often there is a reason for them. In an interesting new video, Dave McKeegan explains all about the history of 35mm film and why we have ended up with the term “Full Frame”.

Sigma has scheduled a Sigma Stage Online event on their YouTube channel for Thursday, September 9th at 9pm JST. That’s 1pm in the UK, 8am Eastern and 5pm Pacific US. As usual, Sigma hasn’t stated what they’re going to be announcing, but it’s expected to be the upcoming 90mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/2 DG DN mirrorless lenses.

Not surprisingly, some details for both lenses have been leaked by Nokishita. Both lenses are DG DN Contemporary lenses designed specifically for mirrorless camera systems. For Sigma, that means Leica L and Sony E mounts for now. Both are expected to come with a price tag of $669 each.

It seems that the fives are all around lately. Nikon just announced the Z5, there are rumours that Sony is getting ready to announce an A5 (or A6) and now, according to Nokishita, it seems that Panasonic is preparing to launch the S5 – an entry-level full-frame L mount mirrorless camera to compete with the likes of the Nikon Z5 and Canon EOS RP.

They say that the Lumix S5 body along with a kit containing the S5 and a 20-60mm kit lens have been registered at “overseas retailers”. Obviously, “overseas” just means “not China”, but they don’t say exactly where in the world they’ve been registered.

Well, there’s been a few rumours and leaks about this one. Some were right, some were a little off, but now it’s finally official. Today, Olympus has delivered on their teaser promise and announced their new sports & wildlife oriented Olympus OM-D E-M1X camera.

From the specs and some first impressions of the camera, the E-M1x looks like it can take a lot of punishment. With a rugged magnesium alloy body and IPX-1 rated weather sealing, it certainly appears to be able to handle some pretty extreme conditions. It’s also a bit of a speed demon, too, offering up to 60fps 20.4MP RAW.

Zhiyun have officially announced the new Zhiyun Crane Plus motorised 3-axis gimbal for mirrorless and DSLR cameras. Technically, this should be called the Crane V3 as it’s being billed as a replacement for the Zhiyun Crane V2, not to be confused with the Crane 2 (review here). Perhaps the new name is to help prevent more confusion going forward.

Anyway, with an increased load and several new features, it’s a nice little upgrade over the V2 for virtually the same price that the V2 would’ve cost you a couple of weeks ago. It doesn’t have the follow focus dial of the Crane 2, but we’ll get to that.
