2022 was a year to remember. For most of us, it was the year when COVID got under control, and we regained our lives back.

It was also an interesting year for the photo-video industry. The community definitely has an interest in underwater photography (3/10 stories), astrophotography (2/10), and general photo-video news stories. we did not actually ask the entire community to vote on the thousands of stories we posted during 2022, but rather we looked at which posts gathered the most traffic.

And so, without any further ado, here are the results.

It’s December again, which means lots of us are sitting there wondering what to buy for ourselves or the photographer in our lives this holiday season. We’ve been saving up all year to get that something special, but we don’t want to deal with in-store queues – or maybe we’ve just slacked on our Christmas shopping this year. We want to stay at home where it’s nice and warm and see what we can find online that gets delivered straight to our door!

So, this means it’s time for the 2022 DIYP Holiday Gift Guides. It’s Day 2 today, so that means lenses. These are some of our favourite lenses that have been released over the last year. Keep visiting back this week as we release our other guides, including cameras, lighting, tripods, sliders & gimbals, and accessories and gadgets.

It’s not common anymore that I come across photos on Instagram, especially those that stop me in my tracks. But when it happens – oh boy do I get amazed! One of the people who always blows my mind with his images is Andrew McCarthy, and it happened the other day with his latest image of Mars and the Moon.

The celestial objects were perfectly lined for a shot that looks like it was taken from the Moon. Of course, we can’t go there (yet), and Andrew didn’t even leave his backyard for this image. He told DIYP a bit more about how he took it and shared the magnificent photos with our readers so we can all admire it together.

Photos of the Earth from space always remind me just how small I am in the grander scheme of things. And in a way, it brings me comfort and peace.

But a recent photo of our home planet had quite the opposite effect on me, even though it wasn’t the intention behind it. NASA’s Lucy spacecraft captured this black-and-white image of the Earth, making it look quite gloomy and depressing

You have to be pretty lucky to capture the northern lights in the UK. But how lucky do you have to be to take a nap and wake up to images of aurora borealis on your camera? Believe it or not, this is exactly what happened to Chris Lowther from the UK.

Chris set everything up to take some photos of star trails during the night. He set a timer and took a nap, considering that it was late at night. When he checked the shots, a wonderful surprise was waiting for him: there weren’t only the stars, but his camera also captured the rare northern lights!

European Space Agency (EAS) Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti has shared two incredible Timelapse videos of both the aurora borealis and moonrise from the International Space Station (ISS). The videos show the neon green lights shimmering across the globe and were taken from different vantage points in the ISS.

Also known as the Northern lights, the auroras have been particularly vivid this year due to increased solar flares and activity on the sun’s surface.

James Webb telescope captures distant planet outside our solar system

Astronomers have used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to take a direct image of a planet outside our solar system for the first time. The planet is a gas giant, which means that it has no rocky surface. Like Jupiter and Saturn in our own solar system, it means that the exoplanet is most likely uninhabitable.

The image shows the planet in four different bands of the infrared spectrum. The exoplanet has been catchily named HIP 65426b after its host star the HIP 65426. The planet is much fainter than its star, and scientists had to block out the light from the star before they could see the planet.

Black holes are, without a doubt, the most mysterious and at the same time the most fascinating objects in the Universe. A supermassive one was photographed in 2019, but many roam the space. In fact, astronomers estimate that there are 100 million in our galaxy only!

So naturally, some of these black holes are hiding in space photos. Do you think you can spot them? Astronomers are seeking help in finding black holes in photographs, and you can be the one to contribute.

It looks like today is all about space photography and space photographers. And if you ask me, I’m not complaining. While we take a break between the first and the rest of the James Webb Telescope’s photos, NASA has another announcement – for the fourth year in a row, its Photographers of the Year have been selected.

The photos are somewhat unusual for those we usually see as contest winners. They give us a glimpse into the NASA scientists’ world, taking us behind the scenes of some of the agency’s most ambitious research projects.

Over its 32-years-long career, the Hubble Space Telescope has captured all sorts of stunning events in our universe. One of them is a merger of two galaxies, and NASA recently shared a photo Hubble took of this incredible event.

Around 520 million light-years from Earth, in the constellation Orion, the two galaxies were brought together, forming a multi-armed galaxy merger. And in this stunning photo that NASA and ESA shared, you can see what it looks like.
