Frio relaunches as a one-stop shop for small light mounting accessories

Frio, the maker of the Frio cold shoe has relaunched under the new management of Imaging Brands, the company which also owns Tether Tools, as a new one-stop shop for off-camera light mounting solutions for photographers and filmmaking. The original Frio cold shoe has now been renamed the Frio Hold and the product line has been expanded with a number of new mounting solutions.

The new lineup includes a number of products for mounting hotshoe based lights including speedlights and LEDs, in various ways to help offer you more versatility on location when choosing where to put your lights, microphones, monitors or other small devices.

The DigitalFoto Tree Frog is an awesome pocket LED light for small products and macro

Over the last few years, I’ve become a big fan of small pocket-sized LED lights. They used to not be as good as they are now, offering pretty limited functionality and they just didn’t produce great colour. But LED tech has come a long way since in a few short years, leading us to where we are today with products like the Digitalfoto Tree Frog.

I have two DigitalFoto Tree Frog lights that I’ve been using to light my 3D printer for live streams and for shooting small product photos and b-roll. We’re still in lockdown here, so that’s pretty much all I can point my cameras at right now. One of Tree Frogs I have is a pre-production model and the other is a final retail version. For this review, I’m only going to focus on the retail version.

Nikon turns to space, investing $91,000,000 in aerospace 3D printing manufacturer Morf3D

I was wondering what Nikon was going to do to keep itself alive with an ever-shrinking camera market that seems to be slowly but surely turning its back on the 103-year-old company in favour of Sony and Canon. Well, it turns out they’re investing in space. To be more specific, they’ve invested as the major shareholder in US startup Morf3D.

Morf3D is an additive manufacturing company supplying the aerospace industry, supplying companies like Boeing, and according to Nikkei Asia, the deal sees Nikon investing 10 billion yen (~$91 million) in the company, becoming a majority stakeholder. This puts Nikon in the supply change for small satellites, a growing market in the aerospace industry.

Super-soft lighting in small home studios

In this article I’ll explain a beautifully soft lighting setup that can be achieved in almost any sized space – In fact, this setup actually takes advantage of very small rooms and the tight spaces of home studios!

In recent months, many of us have struggled to get back into the studio to shoot. Lock-downs and safety concerns surrounding large teams of people have made certain photoshoots pretty tricky to achieve whilst still being safe. But whilst we wait for things to get back to ‘normal’, I thought I’d share a lighting setup that actually takes advantage of small shoot spaces. Maybe you can’t get back into the studio and maybe you’d prefer to shoot in a controlled space like your own home. What are some of the disadvantages/advantages of that?

Tight quarters is one thing, but low ceilings can be a real pain too. But is there a way we can use that to our advantage somehow?

In this setup I play with a clever little setup that uses the restrictive confines of your own home to your advantage, and this technique can be achieved in almost any size space!

You can save a ton of space in your lighting bags with Godox mount modifiers

Over the past several decades, the Bowens mount has become the ubiquitous modifier mount for lights. Created, naturally, by Bowens decades ago, before they went bust, it seems to have been adopted as the defacto standard for the photography industry – and even video lights like those from Godox, Aputure and others have taken up the trend.

But Godox actually has their own modifier mount, used on the Godox AD300Pro and AD400Pro strobes as well as the new ML60 continuous LED (review coming soon!). But why make a whole new mount? What’s the point when Bowens is so popular? Well, primarily, the purpose here is the size and weight advantages, as Francisco Joel Hernandez illustrates in this video.

ILM used a Canon 5D III and Nikon 28mm lens to shoot space scenes for The Mandalorian

It’s funny how a company can use both the latest insane bleeding-edge tech as well as gear that’s deemed “obsolete” by the masses in order to produce one of the most popular TV shows to ever grace our screens. But that’s exactly what Disney did for The Mandalorian – New season begins tomorrow!

Although much of The Mandalorian, and particularly the space scenes, were created using some pretty next-level CG, a number of scenes for the new series in the show were actually shot using the Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR… With a $500 Nikon 28mm f/2.8 manual focus lens.

Here’s how you can light product photography using small LED light sources

Lighting products is a lot of fun, but it can be quite tricky. Most lights we use in the studio for shooting products are huge. They’re often big strobes or LED panels, but sometimes you just need something small. Something you can fit into a small space and light up just a small section of a product, or indeed the whole of a small product.

In this video, photographer Mark Duffy shows us how he uses Spiffy Gear’s new KYU-6 LED lights to light up an Xbox controller for a little bit of small product photography.

Sigma sent the fp up into space to shoot 4K RAW video of the earth from 100,000ft

The world’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera (no caveats required) is now… space’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera? Sigma UK teamed up with Sent Into Space to send a pair of Sigma fp cameras (each attached to a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art) into the upper atmosphere – one shooting stills and the other shooting video – to capture the view from around 100,000 feet.

Canon patent suggests they’re working on scaling down IBIS to use less space inside cameras

A Canon patent spotted by Canon News at the Japan Patent Office, suggests that Canon is looking to downsize their in-body image stabilisation system to make it smaller. While IBIS has obvious benefits, the drawback is that it takes up a lot more space inside a camera than simply housing a static sensor.

This might be why Canon hadn’t implemented IBIS into any of their mirrorless cameras before the launch of the EOS R5 and EOS R6. It simply made them too big. This patent might be for upcoming EOS M system cameras or simply to make future full-frame EOS R cameras a little smaller and lighter while still retaining the IBIS functionality.
