When you look at a photo showing a fantasy world, there is often that moment of armament on how the final photograph looks so real and yet unreal at the same time. That is because good compositors use real elements from real photos and have the ability to blend them in well. Of course, there is more to this art than just selecting photo parts and throwing them together. In fact, watching how a composite comes to life is almost as looking at a piece of art that is disconnected from the final photograph.

Easily Remove People From Your Images With This Simple Trick

It has been my experience that most people are cordial when they see you trying to capture a photo.  They may pause until you are done or ask if you are taking a shot at the moment or apologize if they feel they accidentally walked into frame.  Then again, I live in a place where we wave at strangers while driving just to be polite, so my sampling may be skewed.

But, what happens when you’re taking photos on a tripod outside a nuclear facility and the security personnel keep getting in the way of your pristine shot?  (Buggers!)  Well, you remove them.  (EDITOR’S NOTE:  “Remove” is not to be confused with “eliminate.”  We are forbidden to advocate such actions.)  In Photoshop.  Greg Benz show us the rather straight-forward process which involves shooting multiple frames of your subject (whilst keeping the camera still, i.e. mounted to a tripod) as people are moving about within the frame.

Crazy Wedding Photography with Dinosaurs, Meteor Showers and Giant Octapi

Last year saw the rise of epic wedding photo’s featuring bridal guests running away from dinosaurs, fighting zombies, be awesome Jedi’s and so on.

A new trend was born and I decided to hop on this bandwagon and see if I could make images like these come true.

Photographer Gets Wild Chipmunks to Play Star Wars

Photographing pets can be challenging, and photographing wildlife from a distance can be a tedious and time-consuming process.  But, what happens when you want a wild animal to play Star Wars with your action figure collection?  Photographer and Lego master Chris McVeigh was determined to show us.

Armed with a camera, action figures, and a whole lot of nuts (we’re assuming it took balls, too), Chris forged a kinship with a harmonious collective of chipmunks living in his parent’s backyard.  Taking advantage of their depressed socioeconomic status, he was able to lure them into being performers in his own take on the classic saga…without having to composite any images.

Battle Zone: Photographer Recreates ‘War of the Worlds’ Using Scale Models

Lyn Caudle is a fan of The War of the Worlds, so much so that the photographer and visual effects supervisor decided to recreate the massive carnage in his hometown of Dallas.  Unfortunately, nothing was actually blown up or destroyed during the process.

After creating lifelike replicas of the “Martian war machines” from both the 1953 and 2005 versions of the film, Caudle set about compositing them with scene from his favorite city.

How To: Create Dynamic Water Splash Images

If you’re looking for a fun photography project this weekend, great times can always be had with lights, camera, and a little water splashing around your studio.

Photographer Mark Richardson gives us a fairly simple tutorial for creating water splash images, particularly those involving a wine glass. Using AlienBees monolights with fast flash duration (not to be confused with high speed sync) and a wireless trigger for his camera, Mark was able to almost effortlessly freeze the liquid in mid air and then composite it with a frame of the empty glass for a final image.

How We Shot This Photo Of A Floating Woman With A Simple Lighting Trick

Do you remember your first eye-opening experience with lighting in photography? I think it happend to me while watching one of David Hobby’s tutorials, realizing that the justification for flash lighting is so much more then just “being able to shoot at ISO 100”. Lighting sets the mood, creates separation, defines spacial relation and, sometimes, makes the impossible possible. Today, let’s look at a lighting trick, I’ve only recently come across together with photographer (and good friend) Ethan Oelman while joining him on one of his personal projects.
