After Nikon has officially announced their full frame mirrorless camera, it seems it’s time for Canon now. Website Canon Rumors collected some interesting statements from trusted sources, suggesting that Canon will be launching a new mirrorless camera in late 2018. Or better yet – it may be more than just one camera.

Other than this, they write that the upcoming mirrorless body will not a sensor from Canon’s full frame DSLRs like EOS 6D Mark II or EOS 5D Mark IV. Instead, it will use have a dedicated sensor, developed specifically for this camera.

Photokina is the highlight of many photographers calendars. It’s the largest photography trade event in the world. It’s so big, that it only happens once every two years, in Cologne, Germany. But that is all set to change. Photokina is now becoming an annual event. DIYP went to the last Photokina in September 2016. The next one is still scheduled September 2018. But after that, we won’t have to wait two years.

Not only is it turning into an annual event, but as of 2019, it’s also shifting to much earlier in the year. Traditionally, Photokina has been held in September, but after September 2018, we only have to wait a mere 8 months for the next Photokina in May 2019. And it’ll happen annually in May each year from that point forward.

Promises of devices that let you convert your 35mm SLRs and other cameras to digital have been coming ever since DSLRs started to take hold in the early 2000s. There have been one or two devices out there, but there’s a holy grail.

I’m Back is a company that’s produced a number of film to digital conversion systems over the years, as big clunky grips that also add a digital sensor. Now, though, they might have hit that holy grail. A 35mm film canister-sized device that works in any 35mm camera.

Nikon was one of the last to join the world of serious mirrorless cameras. Sure, they had the Nikon 1 system, but that doesn’t really count. Their first full-frame mirrorless camera announcement was at Photokina 2018. Since then, the company’s announced ten more full-frame and APS-C cameras. But which one is right for you?

What might be an advantage for one person may be a disadvantage for another, and vice versa. In this video, photographer Matt Irwin looks at all of them, from the lowest entry-level Nikon Z30 (buy here) to the flagship Nikon Z9 (buy here). He compares the benefits and pitfalls of each to help you decide which one you should go for.

Zeiss has left the photography industry

According to reports stemming from a post on the Fred Miranda forums, Zeiss is leaving the world of photography. The post, by the user Petegh, states that they’ve received confirmation from the Australian Zeiss distributor that they will be discontinuing all of their lenses and filters, including Batis, Loxia, etc.

It’s probably not much of a surprise. While Zeiss was once one of the biggest names in the industry, in recent years, they’ve been rather limited. Their recent mirrorless lenses releases are only really available for Sony E mount, and since Sony caught up and started making their own lenses, Zeiss kind of fell by the wayside. And then there’s the somewhat disastrous and recently discontinued ZX1 camera.

The $6,000 Android-powered Zeiss ZX-1 camera has been discontinued

Android cameras have had a bit of a funny history. Every so often, a new one randomly pops up, people get excited, and then it just seems to go nowhere. Samsung’s Android-powered cameras all disappeared – to much dismay – then Yongnuo released one a few years ago that apparently didn’t leave China, although Linus Tech Tips got their hands on one, and then in 2018, Zeiss announced the ZX1.

Between the Photokina 2018 announcement and actually releasing the camera took two years. The camera didn’t become available to order until October 2020. With a price tag of $6,000, it was never going to be super popular, but it appears Zeiss hasn’t sold enough to justify continuing it. While Zeiss has not yet made an official announcement about its demise, it’s already disappearing from retailer websites.

Sigma full-frame Foveon still delayed but it may come with phase detection autofocus

In an interview with Imaging Resource, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki has announced that there is a new delay with Foveon sensor development. It sounds like the same old story we’ve been hearing since 2018, but it seems as if it’s not so much the technical challenges that Sigma is facing now. The technical development issues that have caused delays in the past seem to be resolved for the most part. It’s simply a matter of production.

The global silicon shortage has a lot to answer for across many industries, but that seems to be the only thing that’s really holding Sigma back now. Prototypes take too long to create and the sensor itself is still seeing development while waiting for those prototypes to happen. This makes them pretty much obsolete before they get close to production. But, it sounds like we’re close to full-frame Foveon becoming a reality.

French website Phototrend appears to be going all out in the Micro Four Thirds corner lately. After recently talking to the folks at Olympus about their plans, they’ve also been speaking to Panasonic’s Director of Imaging Business Division, Yosuke, Yamane, about their plans for the format, too.

It’s been a while since we’ve really heard anything new from Panasonic about the Micro Four Thirds system since they announced the L Mount Alliance with Leica and Sigma at Photokina 2018. But Mr Yamane says that Panasonic is still committed to the Micro Four Thirds system.

Sigma’s full-frame Foveon camera is starting to feel a little like the Duke Nukem Forever of the photography world. Sigma shooters have been wanting one for years, and when the L Mount Alliance was announced at Photokina 2018, the world was told to expect one in 2019. 2019 came and went with the promise of a 2020 release.

Just last month, we were told that full-frame Foveon would not be coming in 2020. Now, though, according to an interview by French photography website, Phototrend, with Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki, Sigma’s aim is to release it in Summer 2021. Although, they report that it may still be delayed until 2022.
