This week we are up for some editing fun and on today’s challenge you get to interpret a photo shot by photographer Dave Kai Piper. We are including a completely RAW format of the photo so you can gave as much play as you want.
The one that Dave likes best will get its editor a sweet Blue CityWalker 20 camera bag from Think Tank.

If there ever was a golden era of camera straps, I’d say this era is now. The amount of innovation and thought invested in this simple device is certainly reaching new peaks. Since straps are so different in the sets of features they provide, we wanted to subject them all to a uniform test. And what better test than to hook them all up to a farm tractor and see which strap lasts longer.
We tested a range of 6 straps (in no particular order):

Sometimes the film you’re watching has a scene that you just can’t comprehend; you start asking yourself how in the world they could have pulled a shot like that off, and you’re absolutely sure there must have been some green-screen involved.
Though this scene may not be entirely unbelievable, it’s one of those scenes for me. When The Raid was first released in 2012, it pretty much caught America by surprise by being one of the best action films of the year, and undoubtedly the best choreographed film of that year. This year, we got The Raid 2, the bigger, grander, more action-packed sequel that was originally written before the first.
We don’t usually share deals. There are sites that do that far better. But this offer from Black Magic just can’t be ignored. Black Magic currently offers their Pocket Cinema Camera for $495 over at B&H. As it sold for about $1000 until 30 minutes ago this is not a bad deal at all.
This Pro-res capable, full HD, 13 dynamic stops is a steal for half a grand, especially if you already own any Micro Four Thirds Lenses to go with it. And while it does not pack all the features if its bigger 4K sister, it is still a great camera to be shooting movies with.
Usually, a steep drop like this means that a new model is coming soon (maybe a 4K version) and the company wants to clear shelves. Good for us.
Sometime making a great photo is all about getting the courage to ask making it. Photographer Benjamin Von Wong recently completed a spectacular photoshoot involving one of the most talented make up artists I’ve seen – Michael Rosner. It took Ben almost two years to bring a plan together that would make a fantastic shoot worthy of the art.
Ben approached both high end designers Amber Kusanagi and Michelle Hebert, and hair Stylist Dinah Raphaelle toput together an offer Michel can not refuse.
And the shoot came to life with an ultraviolet theme. Photographing Black Light requires a lot of illumination since the material emits really low light, Ben opted for a Broncolor UV Attachment filter which mounted on the move unit was strong enough to freeze the action. (those are only $1,500 a pop, but you can rent them, or ask your local police station forensic team for a lender).
In today’s movies have exploding heads, torsos and all around exploding bodies is quite common, thanks for the aid of special digital effects, but back in the 80’s getting someone’s head to explode was not as easy as starting after affects.
Scanners, David Cronenberg’s 1981 classic happens in a world where certain people have the ability to read other people’s minds and control their bodies. They are called Scanners. The story revolves around an organization, ConSec, who tries to weaponize this ability. But not everyone is happy with this plan. US Magistrate James Francis, a New York judge, recently made a controversial ruling two months ago that you may want to know about. The decision, made in a case against Microsoft, declared that US search warrants apply to digital information even if its stored overseas.
The ruling was given after Microsoft was ordered to hand over the email account of a user under investigation for drug trafficking – the company’s information was stored overseas in Dublin, Ireland. Microsoft then challenged the authority of the government to seize it from outside United States borders. The US Government responded, stating that (according to the Stored Communications Act) online storage isn’t protected by the fourth amendment.
Last month, we shared some work by Alon Avissar, where he implemented double exposure photography by putting together different models with different seasons. The results were both colorful and incredibly eye-catching.
So how did it all get put together? Photographer Andrew Klokow sat down and made a quick, easy to follow tutorial for us, and it’ll show you exactly that. Though it doesn’t involve the seasonal aspect of the project, this video basically guides us along with a picture of a a woman and a bouquet of flowers. If you’re a wedding photographer, the tutorial might actually hold some extra interest for you.
