One morning last December, I woke up and noticed that a dream of mine came true: I had taken a picture that went viral. A picture I took at a friend’s wedding had been shared by UNILAD on Facebook with the caption “Best wedding photo ever.” It had over 300,000 likes and was gaining hundreds by the minute. Unfortunately, they also added an instagram-worthy filter to it, but I figured I shouldn’t complain–the exposure was worth it.

How I created wings from light
Okay let’s just start right off by saying this image is not just my baby. Anyone who has ever heard of the light painting extraordinaire Eric Paré would see this image and think, “Ummm Robert? You totally ripped off Eric’s work.” To which I would kindly respond, “Good job for knowing who Eric is and for being able to spot his work … because this is his work!” Well, it’s halfhis work anyway. You see, this new image is a collaboration Eric and I created together. If you aren’t one of those people who knew right away Paré must have been involved (or at least have heard of him/seen his masterpieces), then you need to drop everything and check him out!!! Eric is an extremely talented, passionate, and creative photographer who specializes in light painting. Rather than trying to delve too deep into an explanation of his process, I’ll just have you put your eyes on this brilliant video he recently released….
9 steps to create a magic portal with photoshop
Over the years as my style and visual preferences have evolved, I’ve noticed that I’m kind of completely and utterly obsessed with any sort of float-y particle/dust/speckle/orb/bokeh/grit. Acceptance is the first step …. to NOT CARING AT ALL! :) I really love the way dust can add so much motion, texture, and interest to the air in my images. Some pictures call for a very clean, sharp, uncluttered feel, but more often than not I get to a stage in my editing process where I want to muck it up a bit with some atmospheric particles. I’m always on the hunt for some great speckled textures to use in my edits.
Always Be Prepared
You never know when a good photo opportunity will present itself to you.
Always be prepared.
I’m not sure if you know this— but I’m actually a Boy Scout (Eagle Scout)— and “always be prepared” was our motto. Whenever we got ready for a camping trip, we made sure we had all of our supplies, and we always planned for contingencies or “what-ifs?”
I’ve tried to always be prepared in many different ways in my life. For example, I try to add a buffer to my schedule when making appointments (if I think I will be able to meet a friend at noon for lunch, I add an hour-buffer and tell them to meet at 1pm for lunch), I try to add a buffer to my finances (I try to live below my means, although this is very hard, and try to keep cash in the bank just in-case for emergencies).
The most important case of being prepared in photography is to always have your camera with you— for those “what if” scenarios.

How I Created This Geppetto’s Workshop Photo Composite
Geppetto’s Workshop is a precious image to me because it features my own father and my son acting the part of Geppetto and Pinocchio. When Child Photo Competition launched their ‘Father and Child’ theme for January, I knew this image was a perfect fit.
I was just awarded the winner of the competition with my fairytale themed photo and I’m thrilled! In this post I’d love to share some behind the scenes of the creation of the image.
Yu Wei Responds to His Ladder Photo Winning on Nikon Contest And Going Viral

From something that was supposed to be a fun photo contest, this has become an open season on Yu Wei.
Poorly Photoshopped image wins Nikon photo competition, promptly turns into meme
Uh oh. Nikon Singapore PR might have some explaining to do.
Last night, Nikon Singapore shared a Facebook post announcing the winner of a photo contest giveaway. There was a slight problem though. The winning photo appears to be a fake, despite the story behind the image blatantly stating otherwise.[Read More…]
