Olympus Gave Out Free Cameras As Part Of April Fool’s Joke; No, Really There Were Free Cameras…

I got to hand it to Olympus on this one, this was a pretty good April Fools Day joke, even if they weren’t actually joking. Facebook fans of Olympus UK saw several posts made by the camera maker on April 1st, announcing they would be giving away three free cameras . All you had to do was show up to Picadilly Circus in London and look for Santa Claus and his elves. If you were one of the first three people to show up, sit on Santa’s knee and shout, “OM-D it’s Christmas!”, you would walk away with a free camera.

Phase One Releases Capture One 8.2; Available for Download

The RAW converter now enables you to separately tone shadows, highlights and midtones via the improved 3-Way Color Balance tool.

The software’s extensive adjustment tools will benefit from an updated processing engine and the entire workflow is said to be faster and more stable.

Other new features include Dynamic Locations, high-res previews for 4k and 5k monitors and improved graphics.

The 8.2 update is free if you have a Capture One Pro 8 license, and available for a 30-day trial if you don’t.

LEAKED: Canon 5Ds, 5Ds R and 11-24mm f/4L Press Release

We’ve known for a while now that these cameras were coming. We’ve also seen their leaked specs (additional specs have leaked since) and we’ve even covered the upcoming lens. Oh, and we’ve seen photos as well.

Either Canon’s security practices have more holes than Swiss cheese, or its marketing department has been pretending to leak info in order to build anticipation. The fact that now the press release itself seems to have leaked makes me think it’s the former.

That being said, while most of the info in the press release is already common knowledge, it does contain some interesting information.

Magic Lantern Boosts Dynamic Range For Canon Cameras. As Easy As Flipping A Button

Magic Lantern are a werid creature to digest. On one hand they are not part of te official Canon team. On the other, they realese incredible features for Canon touching an all aspects of the camera, from RAW video to (the dynamic range enhancing) dual ISO.

Their latest announcement revels a great feature call ML ISO, as opposed to “Canon ISO”. (The develpment name is a boring four letters acronym: ADTG)

The method involves quite a bit of tech, which I dont full understand, but it involves changing the way the sensor is being amplified. Tests done by Canon Rumors member Marsu42 show improvment of 1/3 to 1/2 a stop of dynamic range depending on the used ISO.[Read More…]

How To Build A 60cm Octagonal Wooden Flash Softbox

Octagonal softboxes (aka octa boxes) are great for when you want nice diffused light. They have a very distinct catch light which some photographers love (and some don’t). In this tutorial, David Schöppe shows how to build a wooden octa.

Is it the cheapest way to get a big octa? At ~$30 it probably is. Assuming that you have way more time than money.

Amazing SF Moving Time Lapse Taken In 3D

We don’t usually share time lapse movies here on DIYP, but this one seems to innovative to ignore.

Peter Chang used an array of Canon 5D Mark IIs, camBLOCK and Dynamic Perception motion control sliders to capture both indoors and outdoors timelapse scenes in 3D. (Of course, if you have more time than money, you can always build your own).

While Peter says this is not the first attempt of a 3D motion control time-lapse it is certainly a very impressive one.

The DIY R-Strap

There are several ways to wear your camera strap, you can wear it on your neck in what I’d love to call “The Lunchbox Carry”; you can wear it on your shoulder in a “Lazyman Hang” or you can wear it across your body, like soldiers are wearing their weapons in a “Weapon Cross”. Which one is your favorite?

Now, each of these hangs can be rated on three factors:

  • How fast does it take you to bring the camera into a nice shooting position?
  • How comfortable is it?
  • How safe is it to your camera?

Studio Photography – The Best Softbox Ever

If you did not meet Nick Wheeler (Flickr Stream – a must) until now, you are in for a treat. Nick is what I call a Lean Mean Studio DIY Machine. Unlike the softbox for a hot shoe flash and the softbox made from a well…. a box, this softbox design by Nick is as close to a real life studio softbox design as a softbox can be. As always, Nick has done great job of documenting his work so all the DIYP community can benefit. Making this studio grade softbox takes some time and effort, but well worth the investment.

While this project is great, Nick calls it a prototype and plans on a follow up. Keep tuned to Nick’s Flickr stream – you’ll soon realize that you came for the DIY projects but stayed for the great photography. It all Nick from here on.

This is a DIY project I have had in mind for a while now. When I purchased my studio flash heads, they came with a couple of small softboxes. Although I prefer to use translucent umbrellas whenever I can (small, light, easy to transport), there are times when a softbox is a better solution. While I could use the studio head softboxes in some circumstances with my small strobes, there was no way of effectively holding the flash in place without a lot of jerry rigging. To this end, I wanted to design a softbox that would be light, reasonably strong and durable, adaptable (double diffuser, grid attachment, barn doors etc.) at a later date and have a quick and easy way to mount the flash.

While I achieved most of these goals, the finished softbox was a bit heavier than I would have liked and as is usually the case with these projects I figured out a number of modifications I would like to incorporate into my next attempt after it was finished. For now, I think I will label this as a ‘prototype’ and hopefully come up with something better for the mark II version.
