Announced last month, the Insta360 EVO is the latest camera from Insta360. Like many of their previous cameras the EVO is a 360-degree camera for shooting immersive content. Unlike the previous models, though, this one can also be used to shoot 3D 180 degree content, too. The 360 form unfolds to put the two 180 degree lenses side-by-side for left and right eye viewing. DIYP spoke with Insta360 at NAB 2019 to find out more about the EVO.
The Insta360 EVO essentially features the same internals as the Insta360 ONE X, so you can expect the same sort of image quality. It also makes use of FlowState stabilisation (which is pretty amazing) and you can keyframe camera movements in post, too, just like the ONE X.
So, why would you buy the EVO? Well, it also shoots 3D 180-degree content, too. Stills and video for watching back on a VR headset. You can also live stream from the Insta360 EVO directly to a headset or to Facebook and YouTube. It’s designed primarily for creating 180-degree content, and it’s aimed at people who want to make it. People who want to document life. The fact that it also shoots 360 is kind of a bonus, really.
But then why might you still want to buy the ONE X if the EVO is just as good? The key focus with the ONE X is its durability. While the lenses on the camera are still quite delicate, it can handle a bit more knocking around than the EVO. It also has various housings for it to make it waterproof, or fly it through the air for some unique shots. So, if shooting 360 degree content in potentially damaging situations is your thing, then the ONE X may still be the camera for you.
Ultimately, only you can make the decision on whether you should go for the Insta360 EVO or the Insta360 ONE X for your own needs. Personally, I can’t wait to take the EVO for a spin and make some 3D 180-degree content.
