I was wondering when something like this will pop up. An app that not only shares information about photography, but also tells you how to shoot. Camera51 is just that. An app that tells you how to shoot to get better photos.
I am really not sure what I think about this kind of technology, on one hand smartphone photographers do sometimes spray and pray, but on the other, I am not sure I am comfortable with the idea of letting an app telling me how to shoot.
According to Camera51’s press release:
Camera51 developed the Phidias engine, a complex algorithm that identifies and analyzes objects, faces, shapes, lines and scenes in real time, to provide users with direction for camera position, focus, and exposure. It takes the traditional rules of composition into account, such as the “Rule of Thirds” that divides the photo into three equal sections to attract your eye to different elements in a photo
“Camera51 is a complex technology that makes taking a great photo easy for all users,” says Camera51 CEO Shir Baor. “Today, anyone with a Smartphone is considered a ‘photographer’, however in reality, 99% of users hold only 1% knowledge of photography. Photo apps with filters and overlays distract us from the poor quality of our pictures. Camera51 was created to close that gap and allow users to take perfect frames without having to turn to add-ons to improve their photos.”
Basically, the app analyzes the scene using “rules” like the rule of thirds, applying perspective, analyzing triangles and so on, it then tells you to move the camera up, down left and right.
Ziv Koren who aided in developing the app says: “A photograph can be defined by lighting, depth of field, and composition. Standard automatic features in modern cameras include auto focus and auto exposure. Composition, is still solely up to the photographer’s ability and knowledge. Camera51 revolutionizes modern photography by introducing AUTO COMPOSITION capabilities, thus enabling the camera to assist the photographer in issues that until now were dominated mostly by professionals”
We have seen editing taken by machine’s with Magisto. Are we seeing the photographer’s eye being taken by Camera51?
