Inspiring Portrait Project Breaks Down Stereotypes; Shows Raw Beauty Of Disabled Women

Proving once again that photographers really are a caring and inspiring niche of humans, a group of NYC photographers have partnered up with 20 disabled women to work on a really c photography project. The Raw Beauty Project aims to empower the women and break down many of the public’s stereotypes through . The idea behind the project is simple, each portrait should be based on three simple words: beauty, sensuality, and empowerment. Though those words seems like likely candidates for just about any portrait session, they are not three words the majority of the world automatically apply to people with disabilities. It is precisely this kind of thinking that Raw Beauty is changing, one portrait session at a time.

While the models are most definitely the stars of the exhibition, the roster of photographers involved in the project is impressive. Browsing through their resumes you stumble upon many notable clients like Vogue, Levi’s, Sports Illustrated, former employees of Annie Liebovitz, even a Pulitzer prize winner.

The beauty dish has become a staple of portrait and fashion photographers. When used well, they offer a pleasing and flattering look to your subject. The price of beauty dishes has come down in recent years as more have come to market. But you’re still not usually going to find one as cheap as making your own.

In this video from the folks at COOPH, we see how we can make our own DIY beauty dish for minimal cost and tools. And while they portray it sitting on top of the camera in the video, and it will be better than using the popup flash, I’d still get it off the camera.

6 Light Beauty and Fashion Lighting Setup

I know it’s extremely trendy right now to say that ‘one light is all you need’, and although in certain situations this is true, a of the time extra lights will likely look better, or at the very least make your life easier.

Now before you rush to the comments section to proclaim the purity and simplicity of a black and white headshot being lit by a single light as being the very essence of great photography, I’ll just add that I agree. Sometimes, complicated lighting and over-lit portraits can certainly get in the way of a subject but conversely, a more visually interesting shot can also be achieved with the addition of more lights to draw in and engage a viewer.
