Stock photo search engine Everypixel is a tool that should make the quest for perfect stock photos easier. But what’s even more interesting is their tool called Everypixel Aesthetics. It uses neural networks to tell you how “awesome” your photo is.

According to the developers, this tool sees the beauty of stock photos in the same way as humans do. So before you buy a stock image or upload one of your own, you can run it through this quick test and see what neural network has to say about it. I tested it out, and the results were surprising, to say the least.

Neural network turns your Pixelated, black and white gameboy photos into realistic portraits

Neural networks, deep learning, artificial intelligence, whatever term you prefer seems to be a very hot topic lately. Every couple of weeks there seem to be new developments to show off what it can do. We’ve seen CSI-like enhancements, facial recognition that can see through obscuration, converting 2D to 3D and plenty more. This one, while it might initially seem quite gimmicky, is actually pretty cool.

Research Engineer Roland Meertens has been working with neural networks and the Nintendo Gameboy camera. His goal is to produce photorealistic results from 190×144 pixel images produced by the Gameboy Camera. Released in 1998, it became the world record holder at the time for the “smallest digital camera”. You could also get a little printer to go along with it. It was a very cool toy for its time, but it wasn’t exactly broadcast quality.

Your Next Smart Selection Could Be Powered By A Neural Network

Admit it! object masking sucks. It’s not that it is impossible, even the hardest selections and masks can be created with some work (and some methods require less work that others). But, in general, masking is a hard and tedious work.

Researchers in the The Chinese University of Hong Kong working with Adobe Research are now showing some work that uses Convolutional Neural Networks to successfully mask portraits. The paper bears the boring name “Automatic Portrait Segmentation for Image Stylization” [PDF link], and it shows how selection and masking can significantly improve if the software knows that it’s making a portrait.

MyHeritage photo enhancer shows you what your ancestors really looked like

We’ve seen some pretty epic examples of manual photo restoration and colorization. But there’s now a website that promises equally impressive results. MyHeritage uses neural networks to restore your old photos and give them color. And judging from the examples, it truly does a pretty good job for artificial intelligence.

Behold the video of 1972 Apollo 16 lunar rover ride in 4K and colorized

NASA’s Apollo missions have left us with some iconic images and videos. One of these videos shows astronaut John Young as he was testing out the electrically powered lunar rover during the Apollo 16 mission. Denis Shiryaev took this video and gave it the same treatment as he did to a few other iconic videos. He upscaled it to 4K and colorized it, giving us an immersive, awe-inspiring experience.

Researchers develop after-the-fact portrait relighting AI that works without 3D depth information

When the iPhone X came along with its Portrait Lighting effects, a lot of people were very impressed. Apple was even claiming that you don’t need studio lighting at all anymore or any other fancy equipment. You just need your phone. And while the iPhone hasn’t taken over as the portrait photographer’s camera of choice, it’s an intriguing concept.

A concept so intriguing that researchers and engineers at UC San Diego and Google have taken it a few steps further. They’ve trained neural networks to relight portraits after the fact without requiring any 3D depth data and with a lot more control than a few Apple presets.
