How to create a DIY macro flash diffuser using a Pringles tube

Macro is a challenging subject to photograph. Light, especially, can be a real struggle, so you often need to add extra light to overcome the bellows extension factor inherent in all true macro lenses. But dedicated macro flashes and ring flashes can be very expensive (at least if you want a good one). Are there other options?

Well, you can butcher a Pringles tube. We posted a tutorial on this way back in 2011 to be able to make use fo the popup flash for macro, but this video from photographer Micael Widell shows a similar method using an on-camera flash, allowing you to get much more power for those extreme close-ups.

Why spend a fortune on an on-camera softscreen diffuser? (OK, 9 dollars are hardly a fortune, yet…). This guest post by Huy Hoang shows you how to build one for just a few cents. (Mental note: make a DIY manual on how to reduce the cost of a Nikon D2X by the same ratio). Huy is a member of DIYPhotography.net’s instructibles group – check it out. The idea is similar to the one explained on the speed light mounted softbox article, but takes half the time and can be used on a built in flash.

Hold on!! Why would you want a softscreen in the first place? I can think of two reasons: number one – the build in flash is soooooo small, it is a very hard light source. And 2 – it can not be bounced. However – you can get more out of it. Just to get your appetite going, here is what you’ll get when you are done

In this article Aron Brand will demonstrate how, using homemade and accessible materials, you can improve the light quality of a simple slave flash, and get a natural and soft light. This sort of light is good for jewelry photography, shooting items for eBay and portraits. Note the picture at the end of this article, not only showing softer shadows, but also pops the look of the metal, giving it more polished, expensive look. Hoya has launched their new Mist Diffuser Black series No0.5 and No1 filters

Hoya has announced their new Hoya Mist Diffuser Black creative series filters. Designed to give a “stylish cinematic effect”, Hoya’s new Mist Diffuser Black No1 and No0.5 filters are of the screw-on variety, available in 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58m, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 82mm diameters. The “No” denotes their strength.

The goal of these filters is to create a soft and diffused look that’s often seen in cinema while retaining the sharpness where it counts. Essentially, it gives your light sources a nice soft glow while diffusing the often too-sharp image of modern lenses.
