So cameras have been attached to the backs of wild dolphins recently in the name of science. Well these guys thought it would be interesting to try attaching a GoPro to the back of a large fish in the name of, well, I’m not sure what. Certainly not science anyway.

If you’ve got 12 minutes of your life that you can spare (you’ll never get that time back FYI) then check out this video from Monster Mike Fishing where they show you a fish’s eye view of the world.

A rock climber in Japan managed to film the moment that a bear attacked him as he was descending after a climb. The incident happened on Mount Futago near Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The climber was wearing a GoPro Hero 10 attached to his helmet and captured the whole ordeal in first person close up.

All seems well at the beginning of the video as we watch the climber carefully descend from his climb, his breathing steady. Suddenly a black bear appears almost out of nowhere.

Just as recently leaked photos suggested, the new GoPro Hero 11 is here. And while it’s absolutely the same on the outside, it comes from some improvements on the inside. The latest action cam has an increased photo resolution, improved video stabilization, and extended interval recording times.

But there’s more. GoPro hasn’t only announced the Hero 10’s successor, but also its smaller version. The GoPro Hero 11 Mini is here as well, so let’s check out the specs of both new cameras.

Exactly this time last year, photos and specs started leaking for GoPro Hero 10. So, not surprisingly – it looks like the Hero 11 is on its way a year later. Lioness steals a GoPro, films herself running and playing with it

Animals photobombing or snatching humans’ cameras are something I can’t get enough of. So, I was quite amused seeing a lioness as she stole a GoPro and went on running and playing with it. Of course, the animal unknowingly filmed herself doing all that, leaving us with an entertaining video of herself goofing around with the camera.

This amazing tiny satellite selfie video was shot using an off-the-shelf GoPro action camera

When we think of satellites, we often think of super high-tech state-of-the-art technology being sent up into space. We generally don’t think of them blasting up off-the-shelf electronics that many of us already have in our homes. Well, that’s exactly what the folks at NanoAvionics did when they attached a GoPro Hero 7 (Yes, not even a Hero 10!) to their MP42 microsatellite to capture selfies in space as it flew over the planet.

At 550km (~341 miles) above the earth’s surface, the GoPro attached to the MP42 capture photos of the satellite over the Coral sea and the Great Barrier Reef – the only living structure visible from space – along the north-east side of Australia. It also shot some excellent (and nowhere near long enough!) 4K video of the trip.

A group of baby foxes found recording GoPro and decided to have a play with it

There’s not much cuter than baby animals and especially inquisitive baby animals. Viktor Čech placed his GoPro Hero 9 Black down on the ground in a part of the local wilderness in Turiec, Slovakia to see what it could spot and got quite the surprise when he went back to retrieve it and found that it had moved from where he placed it. Not only did it move, though, but it also captured who moved it.

Viktor tells DIYP that he was shooting a vlog about foxes and had set up the GoPro using the firmware from GoPro Labs. This enabled him to utilise the motion detection feature. This meant he could place his camera down on the ground and it would start recording only when it sensed movement. About 15 minutes after sunset one day, it spotted a group of baby foxes and began to record.

GoPro has released a stripped-down “Hero 10 Black Bones” for DIY FPV drones

I suppose this had to happen eventually. They’re probably sick of seeing people strip down their beloved flagships to get them as small and as light as possible but GoPro has now officially announced the new GoPro Hero 10 Black Bones. It’s a stripped-down version of the Hero 10 Black, featuring the same sensor and processor and is capable of capturing up to 5K 30fps or 4K 60fps stabilised video footage.

And by “stripped-down”, it means it has no screen, no speakers, no water and dust resistance, doors or even a slot for a battery. They’ve done everything they can to strip out anything unnecessary to make it as compact and lightweight as possible for use on DIY FPV drones. Honestly, I’m amazed it took them this long!

Patent suggests GoPro wants to take on DJI with a modular “Pocket” camera

While GoPro is still sort of the leader when it comes to action cameras, it’s been a while since they’ve really done anything different. Sure, there’s the now-abandoned (for some reason) GoPro Hero Session, but other than that each generation of regular GoPro Hero has just been an incremental update on the previous one ever since the Hero 5. Of course, there was that whole Karma business but that’s also gone.

It looks like part of the Karma idea might be coming back, though, at least in spirit. Along with the Karma drone itself, GoPro released a Karma Grip, that could be used either inside the drone or handheld with the GoPro Hero action camera. Now, new patents suggest that GoPro might be looking to tackle that handheld gimbal market again to try and take on DJI again.

GoPro to live up to its name and take on “Pro” camera market with two new product types in 2022

GoPro recently announced their Q4 2021 report and along with it, GoPro founder and CEO Nick Woodman announced that they want to produce more specialised cameras aimed towards the professional market. Now, this isn’t going to be as simple as splitting up the Hero into “White”, “Silver” and “Black” models like they used to. Instead, it seems like they might want to want to take on the likes of Sony’s RX0 II.

Despite facing another challenging year, Woodman said that GoPro generated a “record year-end cash balance of $539 million” and that 2021 revenue was $1.16 billion – a 30% increase over 2020, bringing the company back up to pre-pandemic levels. But they’re not stopping there, with a target of having four distinct product types by the end of 2022.
