If you have ever tried to make a decision between a PC and a Mac, I’m sure you’ve heard the suggestions from the users of either one or the other. Photographer Manny Ortiz is a user of both, and in his latest video, he gives five reasons why he opted for a PC after all.

Manny was trying to find a laptop that allows editing 4K video, and that’s small and portable enough to carry along. The choice was between Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro. Without the strong passion for one or the other – he chose the Dell XPS 15, and there are some good reasons for that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMcXH0–GrI

1. Price

Dell XPS 15 of the same specs as MacBook Pro costs $1000 less. Hardcore Mac fans would probably justify the huge difference in price. Since Manny is a user of both, he couldn’t find the reason why you would spend $1000 more on a laptop with the same specs.

2. Ports

For Mac, you need to buy adapters and dongles. First of all, it doesn’t really justify the higher price I mentioned earlier, and second – you need to keep track of them. PCs have all the ports you may need as a photographer and videographer, so you don’t have to worry about the adapters.

3. Ability to upgrade

With Mac, you aren’t able to upgrade the RAM or SSD. What you buy is what you get. On the other hand, PC allows you to upgrade it, and I know for some people it’s a deal-breaker when choosing between a PC and a Mac.

4. Touchscreen

A thing that Manny points out as another advantage is the touchscreen on Dell XPS 15. Many people don’t like using the touchscreen on their computer because of smudges and fingerprints (I can understand that). Still, some may find it handy and useful, and it could speed up their workflow.

5. Nvidia GTX 1050 chip

While editing in Adobe Premiere, the PC’s never had any trouble, and it edits the footage from all cameras. According to Manny, the rendering time is also impressive.

Of course, neither Mac nor PC is perfect, and they both have their strong and weak sides. But I believe it’s helpful to hear the suggestions from someone who uses both of them equally. It’s probably the most objective set of reasons and suggestions you can hear regarding the Mac vs. PC choice.

Now, in my case, the price and the ability to upgrade would always turn me towards PC. On the other hand, I’d always pick one without the touchscreen, as I can’t imagine photo editing and fingerprints together on the same screen. What about you? Why made you choose PC or Mac?

Have you personally worked with Windows 10 at all?

Yes and it just doesn’t feel right working on a pc. I just feel safer and snappier on mac. That’s all. And I don’t have to reinstall it ever year to clean it up. Like I used to with windows.

I’m not sure what issues your pc had to where you had to reinstall it every year, but I’ve never had to do a reinstall. When I got my pc laptop 6 years ago, I did a fresh install of Win7 to get rid of factory bloatware and I haven’t had any problems (BSOD’s, etc.) ever since. It’s still snappy and boots in about 10 seconds and PS CS6 and LR4 boot instantly. I have a custom built tower that’s about 3 years old now and it too has never had to have an OS reinstall. I’m curious to know what brand and model you previously had that gave you such issues. You should find now that most reliable brands and performance models don’t have such issues. To each their own though.

I used to use a Mac because of the easier workflow with mission control, but now there are 3rd party apps that do the same on Windows. Since then I’ve moved to Windows as it’s more affordable when it comes to purchasing a new machine…

this is about laptop, sure pc should win as the new macbook haven’t really get any upgrade in really long time. but I’ve never own a windows laptop that last more than a year, always something wrong, crashing, viruses or just stop working.
tablet are more reliable than pc laptop ;/

I’m still working on a 6 year old Sony VAIO that was matched spec-for-spec to the top end MBP that was about $1900 more than my VAIO. Top end i7 CPU, 16GB RAM, 2GB video, SSD for under $1100. I’ve never had a virus on it, but then I have responsible internet habits, never had a BSOD (crash), and it just continues to work. It still boots up in about 10 seconds and PS & LR load near instantly although I’m still using CS6 and LR4. I’ve never had to have it serviced. Do your research and purchase a laptop from a reliable company that uses higher quality components and you shouldn’t have any problems.

I don’t get viruses or have issues either. But I’m not stupid and use chrome and don’t click on stupid things or download untrusted software. Pretty simple really. Haven’t had a virus in over 20 years.

Never had a issue with a Windows machine. People that do, don’t update, don’t use anti-virus software and keep it up to date, use the wrong browsers and click on things they shouldn’t.

I do the same on my iMac as I do with my PC, just not lucky with windows. had an Asus and DELL laptop with no good experience, now running with a Toshiba which keep running without outrunning. there’s still a difference between laptop and desktop performance, get what fit you!

Over priced, outdated hardware, unrepairable, locked down, can’t upgrade, no ports, crap graphics cards makes a pretty simple decision. $3000 aud Dell xps 15 with 4k touch-screen to same spec MacBook which can’t be upgraded and had no ports but lots of adaptors, $4200 Massive price difference. Have to be iNsane to go with a mac. And as for osx. What a terrible OS for photographers. Window 10 blows it away in functionality and ease of use. But some people have to have the crappy little logo to make them feel better about themselves ???

I dunno I have my old MacBook Pro (2012) and a new windows 10 laptop. I just can’t stand the windows platform. Not to mention the constant updates at the worst times. I always prefer the mac for workflow. Now if Lightroom could sort out its issues I’d have no worries.

    1. Tommy Botello Avatar

I see the “updates” argument time after time in regards to why people hate Windows. You know you can schedule Windows as to when it does do the updates so they’re not at the worst times, don’t you? Or you can choose to download them and later tell windows when to install them when it is convenient for you. Or, you can even turn the updates off altogether.

Mac defenders will never except that a Windows machine out performs their Mac even when they see with their own eyes. My Windows machine running next to my sister’s Macbook Pro, starts faster, opens PS faster, opens LR faster, saves work faster and I’ve never had an issue with my machine, while she’s has a few with hers. Oh did I mention she spent over $2500 more for her Mac? Oh and my display is just as nice.

i have the same decision to make. currently using a 2013 macbook pro, just starting to look at new machines.
the macbook would be 3100,the pc 2350.
plus i could never upgrade the mac.
i used to use windows until vista when i switched to macs. but it might be time to switch back, mac may have priced themselves out of teh market

I’ve been a mac guy for years but recently moved from FCP to Adobe CC. It’s time for a computer upgrade and I’m probably going to jump to Windows. Apple gained it’s notoriety back on the recommendations of creatives and has since neglected us to sell phones.

I used PC for years and recently went to a Mac, I used the Apple computers at my college.
the one big thing I like about apple and my Mabook is Im able to use it with my iPhone being able to input data such a business date in one device and able to access on it another is a time saver.
Im self employed and use my laptop daily and off and on all day from morning right up to midnight.
I find the Mac OS just a lot easier to use.
In my case I have had far fewer problems with my Mac than any of my windows PC laptop.
