I said it before, and I'll say it again. The reason why bloggin' about DIY and Photography makes me a happy person it because I get to tap into a great stream of creativity fro mother great photographers out there.
Take Thomas
Schwenger for example. After getting some from the Strobist and DIY community Thomas now gives back one of the lightest and easiest lighting kits for portables strobes. With a single page snoot, a mini GOBO and a filter holder, Thomas wins the DIYP kit of the year award. (Of course, like a being a warded a knighthood, there mostly honor in the title, no dough at all.
The nice thing about this kit is that it will completely fold to fit the slot of the 50mm f/1.8 lens that you have in your bag. It also features a goo free system that will leave your flash spotless after use.
Hope over to Thomas-Schwenger.de to have a look. There is a good chance you will end up with a gobo a snoot and a complete photography kit even before you finish reading the article - this is how easy this kit is.
If you like the idea, please be so kind and give Thomas a shot through his mail form.

Gobos and Snoots
The best snoots i've got are home made ones like these. Theres no sense in running out and paying upwards of $50 for one when you can make your own in a minute or two that work just as well if not better sometimes.
Foam rubber
Hmm...can't seem to locate sheets of foam rubber. Wonder if neophrene will work instead? Anyone know of a good supplier or either?
Where to get Foam Rubber
I've had good luck with art supply stores such as Michael's or Craft Warehouse.
May not be as thick as what is shown in the photos above but I've found it works great and cheap too.
Now I am going to go and buy
Now I am going to go and buy some more foam!! This is such a cool idea :D
How to make it?
Hi,
Great idea indeed, but how is it done? Missing some info on that part I think.
regards,
Frank
I've had this idea for
I've had this idea for sometime, but still haven't found this rubber foam yet. If anyone knows where in the US or on the net to get it....
The material to use is
The material to use is called "Foamies Sheets" by "Darico". Joe ann Fabrics and Walmart (in the craft section) sells them for about $1.50 for a 9"x12" sheet.
Foamies sheets
33 cents at Walmart for a 9"x12" sheet
Finally!
The user mentions it has already been commercialized. I think the reference is to the Honl products. When I first saw the Honl products (often advertised on Strobist), I thought... what a rip-off. That can be easily made from foam (Foamies, as others have mentioned) and some velcro. Which is exactly what I did. I'm just glad someone was able to publicize it more than I have.
How is the velcro attached to the strobe
Hey there,
thanks for a great tip, I went to Thomas's site and read through the whole thing, but one thing I am not quite sure about is the strobe, how is the velcro attached to the strobe head?? is it the hook side on the strobe facing out?? and did he attach them without peeling off the sticker (whatever that thing you peel off to make velcro stick) or how is it attached??
thanks again for a great site!
re: velcro
Hi Joe,
The velcro in this project is attached by mere pressure.
I am thinking about some alternatives and will share soon.
