Spiderlite in Action

spiderlight_2435827940.jpgA while back I posted a great lighting project by Alex Campagna called the DIY Spiderlight.

The project successfully aimed at building the Wescott TD5 Lighting fixture (AKA Spiderlite).

Alex even threw in a DIY softbox to complete the design.

If you've wondered what's so good about them spiderlites, Scott Kelby from Photoshop insider shares a great video that has all the good reasons to buy on (or better yet, to build one). See the video on the full article.

Among the good reasons to use a spiderlite are:
- Great daylight balanced light
- Light is nice and cold - no more sweaty models and dead looking food.
- It is portable.- And it is always on

See what Scott has to say and read the comments here.

This thing works!

I built one of these for myself based on Alex's walkthru, I highly recommend everyone builds one of these! It's so cheap but so great

Hi Adam,

Thanks for sharing. I'd love it if you can post a link or an image of your contruction. It may help others to build the spiderlite.

I am still looking for mounting solutions so I can use my bought softbox.

Wow, Impressive

How did you mount this to the lightstand? Since the material is MDF, I was thinking that you could mount it to a 1/4 20 thread with one of these gizmos from Lee Valley. http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/page.aspx?c=2&p=40361&cat=3,43576,52800 But then, that would potentially induce the problem of cracking since you glued up the MDF. As for mounting to a softbox, in one of the projects in this book, the author shows how you can build a little metal bracket device that allows you to mount a softbox on to a flash by having a ring at the softbox end and a hole that fits into the 1/4 20 between the tripod and camera. http://www.amazon.com/Closeup-Shooting-Guide-Tabletop-Photography/dp/193... And one more thing, could you please, please, please show a tutorial about how to wire the thing? With only some experaince with wiring, I personally have no idea how to wire a power cord to 5 lightbulbs. Thanks!

Hello,

Just thought I would share mine with you. I am an electrician so I had a few bits laying around that i used. Its a bit bigger than the one in your article and has 6 light fittings instead of 5. Just gotta work out how to attatch the softbox now.

Will post some more when its finished :D

Hi Jason,

This one looks mighty impressive. I'd love to see how much light it gives.

Thanks for sharing this.
