PRESSlite - The Two Way SpeedLite

presslite_00.jpgOk, this is something I have not seen before. With the big war on who has the bigger better accessorizeable speedlite diffuser there has been a ruling paradigm - bounce your flash to get softer results.

This has been the case with Stofen line of products (see the DIY versions: 1, 2) as well as with the Gary Fong diffusers family (DIYed this as well, though results are just OK with the DIY version).

If you are a Strobist fan, you are going to love this. Presslite just came up are about to release a new concept for flash modifications - Vertex.

They do not try to diffuse the flash, nor bounce it from the ceiling. Instead they try to break the flash power into two halves. This is done using two mirrors, each to control half of the flash output.

Now think of the options - you can bounce half of the flash from the ceiling or from the wall while you direct the other half to your subject. You can control the spread of light. And you can direct your flash anywhere you want to. Nice.

I guess that one question that has to be asked is how sturdy is the Vertex. By aiming it towards a press audience I would think that it needs to be strong to take the abuse pros give their speedlites.

Check out the 3D demo - it is hypnotizing.

Great accessory or great scam

This is either one of the coolest flash attachments ever or one of the greatest photo marketing scams ever!

This is the 1,000,000 question

I would hope it is real.

The support guys are answering emails, so I guess we should all wait till August to fund out.

Cool!

Looks awesome, can't wait to try it out.

more options!!!

and if they make the 2 Mirrors slideable to the right/left you could also split the Flashpower continuously adjustable (1/3 to the ceilig and 2/3 front). oO

Even more options

Hi Pollibus,

I think there is even more to it, once I get my hands on one of those I will post my wish list. I can see tons of new options with only slight modifications.

DIY Light Diffuser

I have the GF Lightsphere and it works to a certain extent. As much as I have wanted to create my own, which I have too, I cannot use it because of my work in wedding photography. Clients wont' take you as seriously if it has scotch tape or something. Nice idea though!

... well.... who knows!

Interesting definitely but really waiting for some reviews before jumping the wagon. As the first poster says this MIGHT be REALLY cool (at least that is how it looks) but also the light could suck and I would want to use two flashs anyways.

Hi dennis, There is no other alternative but

to wait and see. The robotic movie sure makes me want to try it out.

Too complicated?

It looks neat, but I wonder if it would be too complicated to use in a fluidly moving enviroment like a wedding or reception.

Seems very "touchy"

I would think, given the small size of the unit, that it would be difficult to get the light aimed properly... the mirrors are pretty small, and it seems easy to be "off" by a significant amount.

That said, I hope I'm wrong! And if I am right, as with any good photography tool, it might just be a matter of getting a feel for it over time.

can't wait.

this looks awesome. I can't wait to get one.
