Photo Studio Compression Pole

usefulguy from DIYPhotography's Instructables group has posted a pretty neat Instructable explaining how to make a photo studio compression pole. It kinda reminds me of the hardware store light-backdrop stand, but it is even easier to use.

The good news is the cost: all the parts cost 9.43 at Home Depot. Real cheap for an all purpose studio stand.

To make a good thing better, he even has a video showing how one can use the pole in a studio:

I guess you'd be running to Home Depot now. While you are in the Home Depot check out all those cool things the strobist found there.

And to make a better thing the best there is another video explaining how to build the pole. A real treasure if you don't know a wing nut from a long spring (yep - it's double feature night)

I haven't shopped at Home Depot for this exact item, but there are some shower curtain rods that work on the same principle...they're spring-loaded and you compress them to fit your tub/shower enclosure.
I doubt you'll find one that's 8 or 10 feet in length but you can always jerry-rig it by selecting some PVC or electrical conduit that will mate with the existing rod material and thus get it to the length you require. Have fun!

Shower curtain rod?

How about a shower curtain rod. They have similar compression springs in them already and are pre built and come in a host of designer colours ;^)

Finding Springs

I made two of these so far, and found that finding the springs shown in the description was next to impossible. I even printed the picture of them and brought it to the local Home Depot, and they couldn't help me. They did have some springs, but when put together, they just didn't have the strength to really hold up the poles like i would have liked. Solution: The very nice springs in a "spring door chain unit" ( like the one at this link:
http://hardware.hardwarestore.com/73-450-screen-door-chains/storm-door-c...)
Just cut the spring out, install into the pole, and it is now strong enough for a child to swing on. But not an adult. Found that out the hard way...

Compression Springs

Thank you very much for this tip. I went out and build one of these last night. Really help solve my problems.

The hardest thing was finding the compression springs. The guys at home depot were very helpful on everything else. For the compression springs I tried every hardware store in our home town. Finally found two at Home Hardware, and they had to cut them off the display to sell them to me.

Had to make some minor modifications, ie no one seems to carry a wing nut big enough. But the pole worked out great.

Thanks again.

First I have to say....."Well done!"

I totally agree.

It would be great if there was some kind of parts list.
