Never Ever Lose Your Lens Cap Again

Never Loose a Lens cap againHere is an interesting question - please hit me in the comments with your answer -  Where do you put the lens cap when you are shooting? (My answer at the end of the post, if you care).

I use to lose them all the time, which was no biggie. Then Nikon started to ship their lenses with fancy lens caps and losing one cost an arm and a leg. (OK, really just a finger nail, yet...).

I got a mail from Benny Johansson telling me about his newest invention. The invention that make your lens cap never to go away.

Pulling a MacGyver on a shampoo bottle, Benny came up with the perfect lens cap life saver. He ever provides a PDF with the blue prints.

Oh, yea - I keep mine in the back pocket. Always.

First, front, right pocket. Always.

Second, the number of typos in this post makes me want to scream. I'm sorry, but it doesn't seem acceptable to misspell so many words, even if you were typing blind.

I think you meant "lose" not "loose" ;)

I'm normally pretty good

I'm normally pretty good about keeping up with my lens cap.  I, too, keep it in my pocket most of the time, but there is one cap in particular that, for whatever reason, I always seem to misplace.  I lost it the day I bought my camera and the lens that it came with.  It spent the next 8 months under my daughter's bed, and although it's safely back on the lens now.  There have been a couple days where it has gone missing, only to turn up later in the week.

i keep mine in my back pocket about 75% of the time ... the other 25% it's in my jacket pocket or somewhere else (which always ends up with me running around trying to figure out/remember where in the @#$% i put the @#$% thing! haha)

lenscap in my bag

I keep mine in my camera bag for the whole photo session. Since my lens has a hood, I rarely touch the front of the lens.

Lens Caps

I have those sticky things that connect to the lens cap and have a loop that goes around the lens. I pop the cap off and drop it, it hangs from the lens. Perfecto. It's on all my lenses, never lost a cap yet.

Lens Cap Pocket on Camera Strap Cover

Funny you should ask. I have the same problem, especially being a woman. I don't always wear clothes with pockets (i.e. dresses, skirts and some pants/shorts). And afraid of losing my lens cap, I made a camera strap cover with pockets that fit my cap perfectly. The cover provides some comfort from the rough original straps. I posted a step-by-step tutorial (with plenty of photographs) on how to make one of these straps covers with pockets. Direct link: http://www.simplymodernmom.com/2009/08/strap-cover-with-pockets/

Tiffany,

First, thanks for that excellent link.

Second. This no pockets issue goes far beyond camera lens caps. My wife never wears any clothing with reasonable pockets. So I have to take her purse (and it is a woman's purse, i.e. a huge one), her keys, some wipers, lip-gloss, ....

Well, The ext step is to create the camerastrap purse to address this :)

I love my wife, it is just the purse thing...

Though I am not married, I have accepted that this is simply something you must accept. Some of my girlfriends have been worse than others, the worst bordering on using me as a human storage container. I suppose you just have to make yourself useful!

I'm sure it works great for lens caps with ties on them, but my Canon lens caps don't have ties. So into the back pcoket it goes. :)

Thanks everyone for pointing this out. Sadly Loose has a meaning too so my speller did not see this.

I tend to lose all small or not so small accesories. And I liked Benny's idea.

Recently I bought a cap with a string attached to it, and I knot it to my strap, and I don't like it the way it hangs.

So thanks for the idea, I'm going to select my plastic bottle right now!

cap connected

A friend figured out this "idiot-proof" arrangement for me: he attached the cap with a strap that is now looped through the camera strap.

I put the cap in my pocket. Otherwise I'll set it down and forget it. And it's handy when I want to cover the lens. I'm a little paranoid about scratching the lens.

Drill it?!

 • January 16
 • CL

I dont think I could ever bring myself to drill a hole , much less two holes into my precious lens caps.
Also, wouldn't drilling holes in them give you a higher possibility (though extremely low) a pebble might get in through them while they are on the lens and cause some superficial damage to your lens?

Lens cap loss

I keep my lens cap always in a small compartment on the belt of my thinktank camera bag. (I love this bag!) I do have some concerns about dust that is picked up from my pocket when I used to keep my covers in there.

Thinktanks are really great, look like they have everything figured out. It is interesting to hear that you like the best system. I was wondering weather to get one. this is +1.

Me? This is how I keep my lens caps..

 • January 16
 • Young Lee

after removing the lens cap I straightly throw the cap into my camera bag and no worries after that!

To many pockets

My problem are the millions of pockets in my jacket or my trousers. After every camera walk, i am searching whole the day to find the little caps *cruel

I always lose my lens cap!!!

I always lose my lens cap, but it always shows up at some point or another.

I have a cheap white balance lens cap that I bought off e-bay. I only use it for white balance sometimes. What I love about it is it came with a loop, and I keep it looped to my strap at all times, even when it's on my camera.

Thanks

Nice idea, thhanks for sharing.

Who needs a lens cap? Get a filter to protect the lens and never use the lens cap again. I would rather be able to grab the camera (or lens) and be ready to shoot than fumble with a lens cap.

If you once noticed the problem with ghosting images when using a protection filter you won't use it anymore :)

just in one of my pockets

 • January 18

I don't really care about where to put it. If I don't find it it's no big deal the lens is save in my camera bag.

Most of the time when I haven't found it I will find it next day in some pocket when I go to work :-) even if I was sure I had lost it.

In the past I used a lens cap with a small string on it bound to my cameras belt (I had only 58 filter size lenses). But it became a bit disturbing and uncomforable.

Back Left Pocket

Right hand holds the camera, left hand pulls off the cap, and goes straight into my back left pocket. Every time. When driving, it goes in the cupholder. Yet to lose one.

Lens Cap Mania

Thanks for the tips. I often drive myself crazy looking for my lens caps! I thought I lost one last night at a shoot only to find it in my back pocket.

Lens Cap Storage

Normally back left pocket is where I'll put the lens cap. If I'm wearing shorts without back pockets then I'll put it in a front pocket instead.

in the bra

im a woman and i never have pockets but i long ago got into the habit of putting my lens cap in my bra being that I almost always were v-necks and its easy to quick put it there and take it back out. as much as this seems sleazy and really noticeable i have never had anyone even catch a glimpse of me doing it. oh and i have never lost a lens cap yet.

I must say that this is one of the more innovative places on our little survey. I am sure the ens cap wont get lost, but doesn't it itch?

Skylight 1A or UV filter

I have my lenscaps... somewhere, generally though I don't use them.

I only put them back on the lens for long car trips even though the camera is in my camera bag. My lenses all have skylight or UV filters on them. When my wife recently got her Canon 40D we didn't even take the lens cap off until we had a filter for the front of the lens. I've never had a problem with 'ghosting' of images with the protective filter on the front. The only (minor) issue I have is a little lint accumulation on the filter. One quick swife of a lens cloth and that's gone.

Now for the why:

I don't use lens caps because I primarily shoot news photography. Spot news doesn't wait for you to remove a lens cap and when the shot is gone, it's gone. So I've got a quick draw camera bag, I have a Canon 5D Mk II with a 16-35mm f/2.8 and a Canon 1D Mk II with 70-200mm f/2.8.

I have two other lenses that stay in my camera bag, a 50mm f/1.8 (skylight, no lens cap) and the one exception to my lenscap rule -- my 15mm f/2.8 fisheye. There is no filter available for such a lens and as such the cap stays on until I need to use it. Typically I only use this lens when shooting weddings. It's not really a 'news' lens, but a feature photo lens so my other job doesn't see much use with it.

Rear dust caps are a different story too. Unless a lens is on the camera, or in the process of going on the camera, dust caps stay on the lenses. I also always use my lens hoods which not only helps to reduce glare, but keeps the front of the lens (or filter) from banging into anything.

My wife does keep her lens cap on her lens in her camera bag and when shooting drops the lens right into the camera bag if she's wearing something without pockets.

Thank goodness, there's

Thank goodness, there's another woman who uses her bra for more than just storing herself :-) I thought I was the only one.

It's also a good place for memory cards, filters or even lenses. Soft and cushioning. It does get me a few odd looks, but more often than not the odd look turns into a grin and a voluntary model.

That said, a bra is also a good place to put the lower end of a short monopod. No need to carry a long pod, provided you remember to hold your breath a bit. But you do that anyway when you're exposing so long to need a pod in the first place.

I have to say, this is the funniest comment (in a  good way) I've ever had on the blog.

I'm not too sure about the monopod advice, however I am not of the correct sex and obviously don't know enough about those issues.

I was not meant to have a lens cap. I can never find it even if I put it somewhere safe. (tried pockets, tried camera bag, tried my bra...don't ask). So I bought a lens filter and it worked great until I picked up my camera one day and it wasn't on. I lost it. lol So back to trying to figure out something that I will not misplace.
