Heart Shaped Bokeh Appears in Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

OK, so this is not a tutorial, more of a technique spotted. I love the shaped bokeh thing, and it appears that the makers of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World love it too. And they do once and for all prove that geeks + video + heart shaped bokeh is a match never to be broken.

Just check out the street lights in the background around 1:25.

If you like it, you can learn how to make a filter that does this effect here, and here or buy a ready made kit. Thanks for the tip in the flickr threads, Andrew.

Nice find!

But does that mean that they used some dSLR for the shootings? Considering deph of field and bokeh, I mean...

that would be an even bigger find :) however I would be pretty skeptical about it. as long as they kept the ratios right, they'll do fine. Even with Cinema cameras, hehe. see this post for getting the shape size in relations to filter size and focal length.

Please stop referring to it as bokeh...

Its heart shaped OOF (out of focus) highlights you are refferring to, not bokeh.  You cannot shape bokeh.

Bokeh refers purely to the subjective quality of the blur of the OOF parts of an image and the subjective quality of the OOF highlights should always be delt with as a seperate entity.

For instance, some lenses:

a)  Have nice looking bokeh but terrible looking OOF highlights

b)  Have nice looking bokeh and nice looking OOF highlights

c)  Have terrible looking bokeh but nice looking OOF highlights

d)  Have terrible looking bokeh and terrible looking OOF highlights.

Some of the Carl Zeiss range are known to fall into catergory a).

Sweet. It came out so subtle that you might not notice it, but it's very effective!

Edgar Wright is a damn good director, subtle little things like this help his already amazing movie.

Yea, I was actually surprised that I have not seen it before in movies. It is a small detail but the overall effect is kinda unique

Wow

It's pretty much CG work for the reflections of the Xs (representing the Exes of the conversation at the moment) and the Hearts (also representing the relationship that is discussed at that moment.

No, it
