A Turkey Pan Upgrade And Three Cheap Portrait Setups

WizWow and Just Fab have done it again. In this nice fun little video Don Giannatti shares three lighting techniques.

In this short video, Don Giannatti really packs in some stuff. The first setup is shows how to do a single strobe glamour portrait.

The second setup is an upgrade to the Three Dollar Beauty Dish by Just Fab (you may remember her from the Ghetto Studio post). Just Fab has gone from one time aluminum pans to more sturdy IKEA pans. Don also uses foam core and window sun shield (My guess is five more dollars to the setup).

The last setup is has another mode from a lightshere, an old reflector and some tissue.

It is mighty kind of Don Giannatti to share his unique lighting in this video. You can see the picture and some more explanations on lighting essentials.

video`?

I cannot view the embedded movie/video, there is always a "party-poker" popup showing up and the video itself "features" just a poker-screen after clicking on the play button.
I have firefox and windows xp and the latest flash plugin installed. so this should not be the problem?

Plans for updated Beauty Dish

I like the looks of the Ikea beauty dish in the video and have been hunting for the plans but have not found anything. Has a diagram and list of parts been published anywhere?

Ikea

Hi, I am also interested in this Ikea dish. I am wonder what that dish is called at idea, and any instructions would be fantastic.

Cheers.

Supplies from the shoot

Just a couple of comments. One, I tried to get the Ikea pendant lamp and they will NOT ship. You can only buy it in-store. Two, where can I buy white boards Don used as reflectors that are that large? I can go to Office Depot and get boards that are about 36" square but Don's are much, much larger. Ideas anyone?

Dish

Hi,

Love your photos. I was wondering if you have instructions on how to make the dish and where to buy them. I would like to try and make my own.

Rick

Making your own beauty dish.

For those that are curious about the pan, it is a hanging lamp available at Ikea called "Septim". The dark green ones were on clearance for $8, normally $24. It is extremely lightweight and lined with white on the inside. The back was cut with heavy duty sheers used to cut PVC pipe (but a hacksaw would work) to accomodate the speedlights, bent back and taped with gaffers tape to cover the rough edges.. The inner pan are candleholders called "Beta" 4 pans for a 4 dollars. The pieces are glued together with superglue using a clear plastic container that held small cherry tomatoes with the end cut off, any small round plastic container will do. It took all day for the glue to set. The speedlight is attached to the pan using bungee cords.
I will post a follow up to this site with detailed instructions as soon as I can. I haven't made mine yet, Don has the original.

Larger foamcore can be obtained at art supply stores in varying sizes. The trick for the large ones is getting them home, the 4x8 foot size will not fit in a car. I wrapped the ends of mine in plastic and taped the plastic to the back of a small pickup truck. They will fly away otherwise.

very intrested video

Thanks for this video! Kitchen dish is really good idea :)

Great video

This is a fantastic video, looking forward to seeing some more. Always nice to see other photographers using home made stuff and getting really good results!

Beauty Dish

I bought the lamp from Ikea but where do you get the "Beta" candle holders from?

"Beta" dish

The dish is actually the bottom aluminum pan in the section of Ikea that sells pots for planting. There are 4 in a package.

a variation...

after a bit of trial and error i've build one of these.. a slight deviation from the description but very functional..

a detailed view -- front and back of the dish..

Nice one

Thanks for sharing, bhedana

Looks sterdier than the regular aluminum beauty dish. You got to love the lighting they produce. Great sample shot.
