D3A - The Best Photography Contest Ever

d3aUPDATE: prize giving rules have changed. Winners will select their own prizes starting with the first place going down.

Almost three years ago today, I posted the first article on DIYP. It was about creating a Lumiquest like softbox for a hot shoe flash. What started as fun and sharing three years ago grew up to be fun and sharing, three years later.

To celebrate the 3 years DIYP anniversary with the great community that evolved I am throwing the best photography contest ever. The DIYPhotography 3rd Anniversary Photo Contest - D3A. We have cool sponsors, with great prizes, a great judge and kick ass spirit to start the show. Read on for full details.

Sponsors & Prizes

I know that this is the first thing that everybody wants to see when a contest is announced, so I won't keep you holding your breath.

Actually, there is a bit of a wait, but this wait is definitely worth it. Over the next few days I will announce the five sponsors for the contest. Each was generous enough to provide a kicking prize plus shipping to anywhere in the world. This means that everyone is welcomed to join. If you want to make sure you get all prize announcements, you may want to subscribe to DIYP's RSS feed.

Rules Of Engagement

To enter the contest, simply submit your photoes to DIYP's Flickr pool. All the images that are submitted to the pool are automatically entered into D3A contest. That is all the images that were submitted from a year ago today - Feb 25th, 2008. Each Image that is entered to the pool until March 25th will also be entered into the contest.

At the first five days of April, I will announce the five lucky winners.

For this contest, we have the coolest ever photog judge - Chase Jarvis. (I am sure Chase will rebuke me for calling him the coolest Photog, but really, with all the ninja's, Kong fu mojo, James Bond bags and all, I had no choice). Chase will select the five top places for D3A. Those selections will be based upon 10 pre-finalist picks by me.

Images will be selected based on their creativity, originality, and guts. It's not that we don't like pet pictures - just make sure it is an original pet image :). And of course usage if DIY photography gear provides extra points - please, do share this info on the image description.

Once winners are announced, they will need to contact me in one week, via the Flickr mail system, or via the contact form. to let me know their prize choice. Once the first winner makes a pick, I will move to the second winner, and so on.

If contact is not made within a week winner moves to the end of list. If contact is not made by the fifth week, the 6th runner up gets to make a pick.

I will hook up the winner and sponsor by mail.

Sponsors contribute prizes and shipping to any place in the world. Taxes and duties are the responsibility of the winner.

Images will be displayed on DIYP blog. Image rights stay with photog.

Have fun and Good Luck!

You're Nuts!

Did I read that correctly?! You're going to pick only 10 photos from 13 months of pool submissions??? We're talking several thousands of photos -- good luck my friend!

And Happy Blog Birthday!!!

re: Nuts

Hi Brian,

Well, actually only partial nuts. Over the last year I did a selection post of my favs on a monthly basis, so the pictures in those get a head start on the long term submitted images.

For images submitted from yesterday, I will go through a similar process and select the one I like. At the end it will a matter of selecting 10 out of a few hundreds, a possible task.

And thanks for birthday greeting :)

yes

sounds like fun...and easy rules to follow...

WOW!

This looks like a lot of hard work on your part but and very generous. Great idea. I would like to take part but i am away for the first 2 weeks of april. I would hate to win something and then not be able to take receipt because i am unable to check my mail.

Steven.

re: mail

Hi Steven,

That is a fine point. I'll extend the notify date to two weeks.

Happy Bday!

Hey hey Udi!

Happy 3rd Bday! Keep up the great work and have fun with the competition!:)

Flickr Question

What a wonderful contest! I'd love to submit some photos, but was wondering if by posting to a Flickr site my submissions will be subject to unauthorized use by Flickr. Sorry to ask a downer question, but I need to ask it. Thanks!

Deb

re: Flickr and Copyright

Hi Deb,

This is a good question. As with any good question the answer is yes and no.

When you post a picture to flickr, you also state which type of license you would like to apply on this image. The default license if "full copyrights". This means that  anyone wanting to use your images will have to ask permission from you.

However, like any image that goes on the internet, images that goes on Flickr are on the internet. They are exposed in the same manner that the images on your site (which is awesome, by the way) are exposed. This is always the trade off when showing art on the internet. I usually keep faith and so far I was not let down.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response. And...just one more question: Is there a limit on the number of entries? Thanks again!

Deb

re: limits

hi Deb,

As with any post to the group there is a daily limit of three images per day. As for the contest, we are totally choosing quality over quantity. So you may post as many as you would like,  however, only your greatest shots will increase your chances of winning. Maybe if you are not sure which image to use among a few you can just send them all.

With regards to selecting the 10 finalists, I will only select one images from each photographer,

Contest subjects?

I'm new to this site and believe it or not - new to digital photography. I haven't bought my first digital camera yet. I do have several wonderful film cameras. You guessed it I'm old!

Other contests I have seen had required subject matter or specific categories. Anything like that here?

re: subjects

Hi CJ,

This contest is open, meaning you can submit your best work, regardless of subject matter. As I said in the post, originality and creativity will be key points in selecting the finalists.

prize choice

Have you ever considered allowing each winner to choose their own prize in the order that they won? This way a winner will not receive a prize that he/she already owns. Though it would take a bit more time and effort, I would imagine this would be more pleasing to both the donor and recipient.

re: prize choice

Hi Addie,

This is really a good idea.  It will enable each winner to select their favorite prize - even if they don't already have it, maybe their preferences are different then mine.

I will make adjustment to the rules page and announce this on the next prize announcement.
